Emma and Emilia, are they too similar?

My name is Emma (my husband and parents call me Em and my friends call me Emzzie (don’t ask!)) but I love Emilia for a baby girl, nickname would be Millie, Melia or Mimi. Is Emma too similar to Emilia?

Way too similar- you may both end up as Em! Could be very confusing.

TeetotalKoala · 24/01/2020 18:06

I know a mother/son called Charlotte and Charlie.

I used to look after an Emilia. She was NN Millie. IME, Em isn't the given NN for Emilia as people focus on the strongest sound.

There's also Amelie if you like that sort of style, and it's less used than Amelia.

vincettenoir · 24/01/2020 18:07

It’s fine I reckon.

ThanosSavedMe · 24/01/2020 18:08

Sisters no. Cousins yes. Friends yes. Mum and daughter yes, especially with the nicknames you’re going with.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 24/01/2020 18:16

I can see I'm in the minority here but, personally, I think they are too similar.

StartAtNoonKeepOnGoing · 24/01/2020 18:22

IMO the whole issue could be resolved by spelling it Amelia, especially since you’re planning to pronounce it almost the same.

This for me too.

Spidey66 · 24/01/2020 18:24

My brother had the masculine version of my mum's name . The shortened version was the same, though my brother's name was never shortened. It was never an issue.

I think for sisters it would be odd, but not in your case.

AlpacaGoodnight · 24/01/2020 19:03

If it was sistes it would be too close but mother and daughter is fine. I wouldn't say it's more unique that Amelia though as I know A LOT of Emilias and definitely more than I know Amelias. I do prefer the Emilia spelling/sound personally.

TatianaLarina · 24/01/2020 19:20

I agree Amelia solves the problem. (I prefer it anyway).

Emmapeeler1 · 24/01/2020 20:36

OP prefers Emilia though. Emma/Emilia are different names with completely different origins so there really is no problem to solve. And some people call their children their actual names after all. And the DD will anyway know her as mummy!

villamariavintrapp · 24/01/2020 20:54

I would use Amelia. Seems a bit odd to me to use a name that sounds like Amelia, but then spell it in a way that means you share nicknames etc.. like you're creating the problem by changing the spelling.

minesadecaf · 25/01/2020 05:59

My Emilia is Em/Emmy.

EmmaSt55 · 25/01/2020 07:47

Thanks, all. We wouldn’t use Amelia. The pronunciation is similar but it’s not the same and Amelia just isn’t right for us. Who knows, we could have a boy and then as long as we don’t call him Emil or Emmanuel we have no problems 😉. I still love Emilia though so it’s still in the running for a baby girl.

@minesadecaf have you come across many Emilias since having your own? I see on the thread some people say they know lots of Emilias but I haven’t come across any myself.

I only know one little Emilia but she lives at the other end of country to me OP

minesadecaf · 25/01/2020 09:55

I've taught two and know another so 4 between 5-10.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 25/01/2020 10:08

I love Emilia but it's definitely not unique right now - I'm blaming Game of Thrones! I know 2 between 5 & 10 and 8 under 4. It's been high on the top UK baby names for a while now.

I took it off my list for that reason, but I still think it's cute.

Calendars · 25/01/2020 13:06

I think it’s fine and to my ear quite different from each other.

Written down it is similar though.

Will you share the same last name? I avoided sharing the same first initial with my dc. And I also chose different first initials for my all my dc. Simply to avoid confusion with mail etc. Something to consider.

I know one Emilia and she goes by Milly.
