DH says it sounds like Uncle Fester. He prefers Hestia.

It was in a book I was reading.

What about Heather? Same sort of sound but softer.

justilou1 · 19/01/2020 03:30

It is the name of a pigeon-shaped woman in her late 70’s who applies her garish lipstick outside the lines.

Shev1996 · 19/01/2020 03:33

God no it’s awful, think of what other children will call him

Shev1996 · 19/01/2020 03:35

Even worse after reading it’s for a girl, I don’t agree with bullying in any shape or form. I also see no need to invite it, which this will

Rachelfromfriends1 · 19/01/2020 03:41

It does sound like a boy’s name actually, struggling to picture it for a girl.

It reminds me of Waitrose’s Heston sandwich range Blush

MrsBertBibby · 19/01/2020 06:51

Hester is lovely, although for me, Esther edges it. Except Esther Rantzen wrecks that.

Hestia is OK.

Hester is a well established girl's name, I'm amazed so many on here don't know it!

Dinosauraddict · 19/01/2020 07:15

Sorry OP, I also thought uncle Fester...

happycamper11 · 19/01/2020 07:41

I know a teenager Hester. She's beautiful and it's massively suits her. She loves her name. I don't like Hestia.. sounds made up or like some sort of medical ailment.

MerlinsBeard87 · 19/01/2020 07:44

I wanted this name very badly but dh didn't like it. It's beautiful. It means star I think

sandybanana · 19/01/2020 07:51

Sorry but I think it's absolutely hideous

Sewingbea · 19/01/2020 07:56

I love the name Hester and considered it for DD. It was the thought of constantly saying "No, HES-ter, not Esther that stopped us using it."

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 19/01/2020 08:21

Gorgeous

sel2223 · 19/01/2020 08:59

Is it a girls name?

Esther is so much nicer

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 19/01/2020 09:31

I don’t like it I’m afraid.

raspberrymolakoff · 19/01/2020 09:47

I'm surprised some people seem to think it's an oddity or a boys' name. It's an established girls' name with the same root as Esther. It has just fallen out of common use. I think teasing on the basis of names is much less frequent these days due to the wide variance in names. One of my DGC has an odd, to my ear, name which comes from the country of his foreign parent but has never had a problem with it.

BeyondMyWits · 19/01/2020 09:56

In our town Hester's Way is the wrong side of the tracks... would be cruel to give the name here.

PlomBear · 19/01/2020 11:14

Well it’s either Hester or Ursula.

Gorgeous name one of my favourites

minipie · 19/01/2020 11:16

I quite like it but would probably call them Hetty day to day

1066vegan · 19/01/2020 12:03

I prefer Hester to Ursula.

MrsBertBibby · 19/01/2020 12:05

Ooh Ursula is good too. Although most of Mumsnet are obsessed with the Disney villain.

tweedler · 19/01/2020 12:09

I love it. My godfathers daughter is called Hester. She is a well known young artist in Devon now.

I do not like Ursula.

CustomerCervixDepartment · 19/01/2020 14:24

Hester is not a pleasant sound but it’s 100% better than Ursula.
