DH says it sounds like Uncle Fester. He prefers Hestia.

It was in a book I was reading.

I always think of the daemon Hester from His Dark Materials. Nice name. I wouldn't be brave enough to use it myself though.

Bad PP! Spoilers!

Yes, it's lovely. Feminine but strong.

No from me, too close to Hamster.

It’s a nice name...for a rabbit

Instantly thought Dr Fester!

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz The Amber Spyglass was published in 2000 - there has to be some kind of statute of limitations on spoilers 😁

FWIW I think Hester is a lovely name! I've loved it since I came across it in Adam Bede, where it is also shortened to Hetty. **spoiler alert - she gets transported!

It's one of my names. A bit old fashioned maybe.

Just makes me think of the adulterer in the Scarlett Letter. If you’re thinking of it as a baby name, if they study that book in school she’ll be bullied horribly.

I like Hester and also Hettie (if you wanted a "known as" shortened version.

Makes me think of Hester Shaw from Mortal Engines. I like it.

old fashioned. unusual. you have to force yourself to pronounce it. easier to say Esther.

Makes me think of Aunt Hester or Uncle Fester

Esther is lovely but Hester no.
Agree, Celeste is similar. Harsh names.

Hester is preferable to Hestia!

Never heard of Hestia or Hesta, but assumed they were male names. Sorry, but awful. They sound sharp and short. I too thought of Uncle Fester.

@Sleepthief Normally I would agree, but now there's the TV series. It's opened the story up to a whole new audience and readers. And for them it's spoilers. I hated readers deliberately spoiling Game of Thrones for everyone else.

Back on track.

Hestia is the Greek goddess of the hearth and home. Pretty sounding, but not a name I would want to use on my daughter. Hesta is not a good variant. Hester is still a great name.

I really like it. Strong, rarely used, cool and edgy, old name ready for a comeback I think. It doesn't need a short form but you could use Tess or Hettie if you wanted.

If I'd had another DD it's what I'd like her to have been called. Lovely name and due a rebirth.

It’s pretty, but I feel like it’s one of those names you have to make more effort to say, because of the h, although that might just be me, I do like it though.

It sounds quite boyish to me!
