Will be a brother to Charles, what do we think? Two months to go and really struggling. I think I like it but don't love it.

Why would they get bullied as a teen??

emilybrontescorsett · 16/01/2020 20:38

After your update I would definately choose it.

ooooohbetty · 16/01/2020 20:40

Yes. One of the few names asked about on MN that isn't crazy.

misspiggy19 · 16/01/2020 20:44

Hate, hate, hate it. I even hate the spelling of the name.

BikeRunSki · 16/01/2020 20:48

It sounds like a very sweet little bit with a great sense of humour and a very cool mum. who is proving to be a good ally to DS now they have gone to high school.

painintheholeSIL · 16/01/2020 21:26

I don't love it. I don't hate it either though. I went to school with a few lads called Seamus. I'm Irish, in Ireland though. If you're not maybe Shay/Sé

Focalpoint · 16/01/2020 21:42

So lovely that you have a reason for picking it - the connection to Heaney and a love of his poetry. Better than some random name from a list.

I'm Irish so not a good judge of names in England.

thetrinityisshite · 16/01/2020 21:48

What about Fergus? No connection to Heaney but it feels of the same ilk as Seamus.

YourOpinionIsNoted · 16/01/2020 21:53

No from me, but that's because as an ex English teacher I also think of Seamus Heaney... But I really don't like his poetry!

Newname12 · 16/01/2020 21:54

That kid would get sooo bullied as a teen

Why? Irish names are fairly popular, even those with traditional spellings such as niamh and siobhan.

Maybe we should stop teaching kids to rip the piss out of names rather than suggesting people change their behaviour to accommodate bullies Hmm

Newname12 · 16/01/2020 21:57

Oh and o/p, i love it. It’s a family name for me and I have very fond memories of those called it.

Although many anglicised to james during the troubles in the 70’s and 80’s.

Cillmantain · 16/01/2020 21:59

Love it but I am biased as an Irish woman

survivingdad · 16/01/2020 22:04

No from me, written down it looks like a bodily fluid and I can't get passed that thought! Sorry op

bridgetreilly · 16/01/2020 22:05

I like it and don't particularly think of it as old man (there was a kid in Harry Potter called Seamus). But I don't like Shay AT ALL.

Liverpoolgirl52 · 16/01/2020 22:06

Not keen on Seamus. Hugo is similar to Hugh?

Pinnacular · 16/01/2020 22:09

Love Seamus. Not keen on Hugh / Hugo.

SleeplessWB · 16/01/2020 22:12

As a teacher I can honestly say I have never had a child say that someone has made fun of their name in 15 years of working in schools. Young people so not have the same preconceptions about names as adults do, and names are so diverse now that having an unusual name is just not an issue. I think with Seamus the problem is more likely to be people not knowing how to spell/say it.

Rosere · 16/01/2020 22:12

Not a Heaney fan myself but I love the name Seamus. Suits the whole lifespan I think. Baby Seamy right up to Seamus the 90 year old.

InTheWalls · 16/01/2020 22:14

I love Seamus and would definitely use it!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/01/2020 22:15

Sounds too much like semen

Noshowlomo · 16/01/2020 22:16

I LOVE it. I wanted to call my son Seamus but DH didn’t like it 🙁

WoodliceInSunderland · 16/01/2020 22:19

Lovely name! 👍🏻

Not sure why anyone would think it would lead to bullying?

CountFosco · 16/01/2020 22:20

Like the name, love the reason, but would it bother you that it's an 'old man' name in Ireland?

Yellowcakestand · 16/01/2020 22:20

My brother has changed his name to Seamus.

I work with an Irish Seamus.

I don't like the full name but the guy I work with calls himself Se (pronounced Shay), which I do like.

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 16/01/2020 22:20

Seamus is late 60’s, has greying curly strawberry blonde hair, a beard and a pipe. He leans back on the gate of the field with one foot perched on it while he has a yarn to mick sweeney through the door of his blue ford tractor. Shep sits at his feet.

Having said that, I love the name Seamus. Grin
