Hello! I’m trying to think of a baby girls name which I’m really struggling with - boys are so much easier! Have shortlisted the following and was hoping for some views:

Laura
Sophie
Imogen
Martha
Isobel
Adeline

Any thoughts? We’re looking for something feminine but not too frilly or trendy. I love Isobel but worry it’s a bit popular at the moment. Thank you!

Imogen no where near as popular as it was 10 years ago. Numbers have declined each year.

Really like Martha

Whatsyourflava · 16/01/2020 19:48

Ps. Imogen is my fav though

Sparklehead · 16/01/2020 19:54

I like all of them but Adeline is my favourite. I have an Ada, and, in hindsight I wish I’d given her the full name Adeline and shortened it to Ada.

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 16/01/2020 19:55

Isobel is a great name, although I'm biased as I have an Isabel
Followed by Laura, could Lauren also be a possibility?

katie43210 · 16/01/2020 20:07

I have an 8 year old Sophie and she is the only one in her school, it isn't as popular in some areas as people may think and I love it anway

Whatsyourflava · 16/01/2020 20:17

I agree @katie43210 about Sophie. I haven’t met one at baby groups

Sophie has actually declined in numbers every year for the past 20 years . It used to be the number 1 name but is now about to exit the top 20

Lovely name

emilybrontescorsett · 16/01/2020 20:30

Isobel (prefer this spelling too) and Adeline are my favourites.
I'm not keen on Martha.

scribble2020 · 16/01/2020 21:17

Thanks everyone, definitely no consensus (which I was expecting as it’s so subjective) but I’m feeling much happier with my shortlist based on the feedback as someone at least likes each of them! @icannotremember really intrigued which your two all time favourites are now?

Definately Sophie with Martha as a close second.

TatianaLarina · 16/01/2020 22:57

Imogen by miles. Like Martha. The rest - meh.

jfoyo26 · 16/01/2020 23:02

Laura all the way

Forcryingoutloudwtf · 16/01/2020 23:05

Laura

dazzlingdeborahrose · 17/01/2020 07:43

I have an Isobel so I'm biased. It can't be that common because we can never find anything with her name on it. She's 15 now and still nothing!!! Pick a name you like. So what if it's popular. Even if you pick an 'unusual' name, you may find that's about to be the trendy name.

Yehdivvy · 17/01/2020 22:02

I've met one 25 year old Adeline but loads of the other names in the 1 - 10 year age group. Adeline is a very beautiful and rare name which is why it's my favourite. You can guarantee that she'll be one of a select few.

Butterfly005 · 17/01/2020 22:05

I like Martha, Isobel, Adeline and Sophie best - although I'm biased about Sophie as it's my name! I like my name and to be honest I haven't met that many other Sophies in my life.

TatianaLarina · 18/01/2020 10:17

Really? Two of my best friends are called Sophie, my sister is a variant of Sophie and she has a best friend called Sophie too.

There are an awful lot of them...

icannotremember · 19/01/2020 14:00

@scribble2020- Isobel and Sophie/Sofia. But I only seem to produce boys so never got to use them!

BobbyBlueCat · 23/01/2020 18:57

Laura - bland
Sophie - nice
Imogen - like it
Martha - like it
Isobel - harsh sounding
Adeline - beautiful

daisypond · 23/01/2020 19:09

Laura, Sophie or Isobel are great. Laura is unusual these days.

MrsBertBibby · 24/01/2020 06:04

Laura lovely
Sophie dislike. A lot. Sofa
Imogen very good
Martha the biblical household drudge.
Isobel like this but a lot of them around.
Adeline fussy and not very nice sounding.

GreyerbytheDay · 24/01/2020 06:28

In terms of nicknames, my Imogen has never been Immy - she is Imo, Ims or Molly.

sheetspread · 24/01/2020 16:26

I like Laura, Martha and Sophie the best! Imogen and Adeline I'm not keen on at all, and Isobel is okay.

ravensoaponarope · 26/01/2020 08:07
  1. Adeline
  2. Imogen
Longwhiskers14 · 26/01/2020 08:17

TatianaLarina Sophie was REALLY popular about 20-30 years ago but it's slipped out of fashion and there are loads more Sophias now. I think it's a timeless classic though.

TatianaLarina · 26/01/2020 11:28

Sophie is actually at 14 in the top 100 baby names 2019.
