Talk me out of 'Darwin'

DH and I really struggle to agree on names. I'm watching a documentary on Charles Darwin because I'm cool and suggested it to DH, who actually bloody loves it!
Now I'm in a bind. I do really like it, and it's one of few names so far we've agreed on, but I don't know if I'm brave enough to actually name a child this.

I’ve heard worse.
I worry about if they ever did anything slightly stupid though

frankincenseandmur · 10/01/2020 16:21

I think it’s really cool

JassyRadlett · 10/01/2020 16:21

I actually know a Darwin.

But... Awards.

BasilOfBakerStreet · 10/01/2020 16:22

You're not helping @frankincense! Grin

My first thought was winning the Darwin awards

OhioOhioOhio · 10/01/2020 16:22

I don't like it but I've heard worse.

SigridTheHaughty · 10/01/2020 16:24

Might be assumed by some that you're a rabid antitheist.

PlantPotting · 10/01/2020 16:24

What are your other options that you both like?

I came up with some really mad ideas when i was pregnant and I’m so relieved I didn’t use

I suppose the thing to remind yourself is that rather than being a world famous scientist, your child is statistically far more likely to end up working in a local call centre or office. A name like “Darwin” perhaps suggests the parents had high hopes that are sort of impossible to meet

“Hello you're speaking to .....Darwin..... can i help you with your travel insurance”

Lindy2 · 10/01/2020 16:30

I actually rather like Darwin.

Unusual without being too out there.

Yes there's the "Darwin Awards" but most people can find something like that for pretty much any name.

My dog's name 😁 🐶

palomapear · 10/01/2020 16:35

I rather like it.

But it's a going to raise an eyebrow

How about getting a dog or cat and using it for them

TempsPerdu · 10/01/2020 16:39

I can’t, I actually like it! Nice meaning (‘dear friend’), excellent namesake, easy to pronounce and spell, different but not too bizarre... sorry but it’s a yes from me! Smile

alexdgr8 · 10/01/2020 16:40

no, I don't think its a good idea, and I've never heard of the Darwin awards, guess something to do with science.
anyway, what about naming the child Charles Darwin surname, if you're really set on getting Darwin in there.
Charles is a good solid name, can be Charlie informally, which is v cool.

lanbro · 10/01/2020 16:41

I like it!

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 10/01/2020 16:43

I really like it too!

Dancingfairydreams · 10/01/2020 16:44

I was going to post about this name the other day 🙈 I really like it for a girl.

Cohle · 10/01/2020 16:46

He expressed some profoundly sexist views which would put me off personally.

Men attain "a higher eminence, in whatever he takes up, than can women—whether requiring deep thought, reason, or imagination, or merely the use of the senses and hands."

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 10/01/2020 16:47

I know a Darwin; he's funny, intelligent and successful in his field. I also know a Derwin who is a dreadful bigot and a bully...go figure all for the sake of a letter Grin

avocadoze · 10/01/2020 16:50

I like it! Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy

yogo · 10/01/2020 16:52

I like it but I think of the awards, or someone shouting Alright Darw'in ?

Disclaimer I live near a busy London market and hear the second one daily.

BarkandCheese · 10/01/2020 16:53

I like it too, sorry!

Showmeyourhero · 10/01/2020 16:53

It's a yes from Me, sorry! Grin

ContessaferJones · 10/01/2020 16:55

If it's about the scientist credentials rather than the name, may I suggest Alfred Russell Wallace as an alternative for inspiration? Not keen on Darwin, sorry

user1493494961 · 10/01/2020 16:56

I know a Darwin but don't like it. He's sometimes called Daz by his friends, which his Mother hates.
