Due a little boy in April, I love the name Toby but my DH prefers Tobias.. I honestly don't think I have ever met anyone called Tobias in my life 😂

What do you all prefer? Toby or Tobias? X

I think I prefer Toby but also like Tobias

I know mumsnetters are a big fan of formal full name on birth certificate but I don’t care really. My own birth certificate has a shortened version of a fuller name and I like it that way!

autumndreaming · 10/01/2020 09:45

Much prefer Tobias

nurseymummyx · 10/01/2020 10:05

Tobias is starting to grow on me I think.. We like Oliver as well (I prefer Olly, DH prefers Oliver) 😂 I think I see a pattern here lol x

Oliver and Tobias are both gorgeous names

Cookit · 10/01/2020 11:34

I love Toby/ Tobias too.

I had this on my shortlist and we debated whether Toby needed a full name and I think in the end decided it did really, and should be Tobias... except that DH wasn’t so keen on Tobias! So out went Toby/ Tobias.

Lavenderblues · 10/01/2020 11:41

Don't call him Toby if you don't like the full name Tobias.

OverthinkingThis · 10/01/2020 11:41

Normally i agree with the 'long form on the birth certificate' principle as it gives DC an extra name option on later life, but in this case maybe not, as I love Toby and don't really like Tobias!

Lavenderblues · 10/01/2020 11:42

Just like you probably wouldn't call your son Olly but Olivet!

PlantPotting · 10/01/2020 11:50

At all schools now they seem to ask parents in advance what their child wants to be “known as” , whatever name you put in that box, that’s the name that’s on the register, on their coat peg etc etc. So it’ll be easy for everyone to call your son Toby and only his parents to know it’s actually Tobias on the birth certificate
You probably know this already but I hadn’t appreciate how easy it is to enforce a nickname

Peachbubble · 10/01/2020 11:59

Toby

Mandarinfish · 10/01/2020 12:03

I prefer Toby. I’d have no problem if DH wanted Tobias on the birth certificate and we all called him Toby from day 1, but if DH actually wants to call him Tobias I think you need to find another name.

nurseymummyx · 10/01/2020 13:25

Thanks everyone for the fabulous advice! I spoke to DH and he says he would use the name Toby, but likes that baby would have Tobias as a formal name which I can agree with. We have a son called Daniel, and always call him Danny (only call him Daniel when he's misbehaving) 😂

Now we are stuck between Oliver and Tobias! Both such great names.

MikeUniformMike · 10/01/2020 13:31

Danny and Olly and Danny and Toby are good.
I prefer Toby to Olly but Oliver is nicer than Tobias., so not much help really
Tobias Oliver known as Toby?

NameChange30 · 10/01/2020 13:32

I love Toby and would use Tobias or Tobin on the birth certificate.

I also like Oliver but don't like Olly/Ollie (too popular for my generation!)

Lobsterquadrille2 · 10/01/2020 13:35

I have a cousin Tobias who is always called Toby. He was born when I was seven so to me he was Milly-Molly-Mandy's dog, but it's a lovely name that's not over used.

nurseymummyx · 10/01/2020 14:03

Never heard of Tobin! I'm liking that too!

I think they are both lovely.. Think I'm swaying more Toby than Oliver, as Oliver is quite overused in my area. Don't know of a Toby/Tobias! X

Dietcokeaddiction · 10/01/2020 14:11

I prefer Toby/Tobias to Oliver bit I like them all.
I know four Tobys (ages 9-17) and three are just Toby and one is Tobias.

SaintGarbo · 10/01/2020 14:47

I love the name Toby.

Daniel and Tobias is awesome.

PlantPotting · 10/01/2020 14:49

Danny and Toby sound so great together @nurseymummyx

With Daniel and Tobias on birth certificates

usernamerisnotavailable · 10/01/2020 14:52

Oliver is far too popular. Tobias much nicer too!

MrsBertBibby · 10/01/2020 18:54

Toby is fine as a standalone. I very much prefer Tobin to Tobias, if you really want that.

Fifthtimelucky · 10/01/2020 20:31

I usually prefer long names for birth certificates, but I do like Toby and don't particularly like Tobias. Definitely prefer Oliver to Olly though.

This thread has reminded me that I had a huge crush on Oliver Tobias when I was a teenager!

nurseymummyx · 11/01/2020 16:12

Now googling Oliver Tobias 😂 I'm really starting to love the name! I was working last night and everyone who I asked liked it too. Anyone have any middles names they would put next to Tobias? X

OP posts:
Dietcokeaddiction · 11/01/2020 23:50

Tobias Alexander
Tobias Edward
Tobias Henry
Tobias Samuel
Tobias Finlay
Tobias Charles

blondie87 · 19/01/2020 07:51

Hi OP, I am having a similar dilemma! One of my four top boys’ names is Toby and I am so unsure whether if we went with it to put Tobias or just Toby on the birth certificate. Have you decided between Tobias and Oliver? I think middle names that work with Tobias are:
Tobias Oscar
Tobias Joshua
Tobias Willaim
Tobias John
Tobias George
Tobias Jack
