Raphaella spelling

Bezalelle · 09/01/2020 09:53

DH has chosen our boy's name if DC is a boy (due Aug/Sep). The girl's name is up to me, and I really love Raphaella.

The question is, how to spell it.

Raphaella
Raphaela
Rafaella
Rafaela

DH is Israeli, and I think the most common 'Hebrew' spelling in English would be Raphaela. But does that look strange?

The more I look at the spellings, the more they ALL look strange!

Help!

I think Raphaella looks over complicated, all the others look fine. I would probably go with Rafaella

Poorolddaddypig · 09/01/2020 10:40

Rafaela is amazing

WildCherryBlossom · 09/01/2020 10:42

Raphaela looks right to me. A double L looks slightly fussy I think.

Rafaela would be the Spanish / Italian alternative.

wakemewhenitsallover · 09/01/2020 10:43

Raphaella is the only spelling I've heard of.

Rafaella looks like a version for people who can't spell (sorry!) but that might just be me as I'm not familiar with it.

WildCherryBlossom · 09/01/2020 10:44

It's going to be easier for her to learn to spell Rafaela...

It's going to be easier for her to learn to spell Rafaela...

Why? When they're young, they have no preconceived ideas about phonics. They learn to write their name first. An understanding of typical uses of letter combinations comes later.

One of my DC has a name that isn't spelled how you would guess, phonetically (as not an English name). But he had no trouble learning to spell it as he hadn't learned the rules that go with the letters in his name. It was just his name.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Luckily I have a good while to decide.

With a ph rather than an f. The l's i'm sure about!

emmathedilemma · 09/01/2020 11:55

not sure about on the l's that should be!

sarahjsdddd · 09/01/2020 12:04

I prefer with a ph :)

17caterpillars1mouse · 09/01/2020 19:48

Love this name and the Raphaella spelling. Love the nn Raffy

HarrietM87 · 09/01/2020 19:51

Raphaela looks right to me. With an “f” it’s Spanish looking, with the double l it looks fussy.

OhMeows · 09/01/2020 19:54

Rafaela. Fab name.

MikeUniformMike · 09/01/2020 20:15

Is it a sort of chocolate? A bit like the Ferrero rocher?

ShivD · 09/01/2020 21:06

This name is the top of our girls list too, it was the name of the sonographer at the 20 weeks scan and have loved it since. Will you use the full name or shorten it do you think?

I prefer one of the ‘ph’ versions, one of my boys has a name starting with Ph and he’s he no issues with spelling it etc.

ThisIsFine · 09/01/2020 21:08

I like Rafaela

DramaAlpaca · 09/01/2020 23:09

My preferred spelling would be Rafaella.

MerryGrinch · 10/01/2020 14:20

I prefer Rafaella.

Beautiful name

TheCanterburyWhales · 10/01/2020 14:23

You've missed out the Italian spelling, just to confuse you more!
Raffaella.

sleepyhead · 10/01/2020 14:26

All the Rafael / Rafaelas I know are Greek or Spanish so the "f" and one "l" looks right to me.

Dietcokeaddiction · 10/01/2020 15:17

I prefer Rafaela or possibly Rafaella.
I know a Raphaella and it always looks too long to me!

WeshMaGueule · 12/01/2020 07:55

Raphaëlle in French, just to be helpful ;-)

Bezalelle · 12/01/2020 07:58

I think I'm leaning towards Raphaela but will discuss with DH. Middle name will be a two syllable Yiddish name after his gran. Surname rhymes with Kravitz. I love Raphy/Raffy as a nickname.

Really hope it's a girl now Grin (obviously we'll be delighted with a boy too)

If you have a boy it can be Rafferty. Same nickname!

WildCherryBlossom · 12/01/2020 15:27

Or Raphael... I love the name Raphael.
