Ivy or Lillian?

Slowly narrowing down our girls list (I will stop posting I swear! It just took such a long time to agree on DD1)

Lillian would be nicknamed Lil/Lily

Ivy I just really like at the moment.

Don't like either of them.
Lily is much nicer than Lillian.
Ivy makes me think of Ivy Tilsley.

Astronica · 02/01/2020 20:10

I think both are lovely. I can't easily choose between these but slightly prefer Lillian I think. (I do like the Lilian spelling more but Lillian spelling seems to be most used at the moment.)

Mollie3 · 02/01/2020 20:12

Ivy! Love this name it’s classic but strong, not over-used and not too ‘flowery’
Oh hold on, kind of reminds me of an IV drip tho. Don’t let that put you off I’m sure you won’t x

Soawesome · 02/01/2020 20:13

I like them both but prefer Ivy.

FluffyEggsontoast · 02/01/2020 20:31

I love Ivy ❤️ Perfect name!

mamablondie · 02/01/2020 20:35

@Mollie3 I had already thought of the IV drip thing! But I can’t decide if it bothers me or not aha

I have an Ivy so I'm biased. But this thread is the first time I've heard the comparison to and IV drip ha

NoSauce · 02/01/2020 22:54

Ivy reminds me of Ivy Tildsley too. But even without that it’s just awful. As bad as Enid, Edith, Ada, Ida. So many beautiful names in the world to choose from!

YourOpinionIsNoted · 02/01/2020 22:56

Lillian, it's such a wonderfully grown up name.

Seems like all girls' names at the moment end in either 'eee' or 'ah' sounds - be a bit different!

AvaBabeyy · 02/01/2020 22:58

Ivy

june2007 · 02/01/2020 23:02

Lillian is my mums name, she diaslikes so much she hardlu uses it. But tBH I prefer it to Ivy. I think of Ivy the terrible from Beano.

MrsBertBibby · 02/01/2020 23:10

Ivy is nice enough but very very popular. Lilian is too close to the equally overused Lily, and I'm not keen tbh.

Cinammoncake · 02/01/2020 23:19

Ivy. Lilian a bit wet (sorry)

DramaAlpaca · 02/01/2020 23:20

I prefer Lilian (that spelling, Lillian looks wrong) to Ivy.

Notso · 02/01/2020 23:29

Ivy. Too many Lily/Lilian/Lilia/Lillee/Lilith

mamablondie · 03/01/2020 09:10

@june2007 does your mum use Lily instead then? My rationale is I like Lily but it is so so popular, I wanted to give her the option of using Lillian/Lilian should there be 5 other Lily’s in her class.

@MrsBertBibby any other suggestions if I like these two? It’s funny because DD1’s name is in the top 30 and I encounter far more of them than Lily’s. I do know what you mean though, I posted a shortlist a little while ago but I’ve just gone off a lot of them ... it’s so hard!

OP posts:
MrsBertBibby · 03/01/2020 10:06

What was the shortlist?

bluemoon2468 · 03/01/2020 10:19

@NoSauce I literally love all of those names 😆

OceanSunFish · 03/01/2020 10:20

Ivy - lovely name

PlaymobilPirate · 03/01/2020 10:22

My best friend is a Lilian. She hates it - growing up she was called 'Lillette'

mamablondie · 03/01/2020 10:44

@bluemoon2468 I love the old fashioned, vintage sounding names also! I think they are quite marmite though you either love or hate them :)

@MrsBertBibby

Sofia
Violet
Florence
Holly
Imogen
Matilda

DD1 is Ruby and we are settled on Arthur for a boy if that gives you some idea of what we like.

Cinammoncake · 03/01/2020 17:08

I love Sofia and Violet

I'd go for Lily over Lilian OP, much nicer imo

missmouse101 · 03/01/2020 17:09

Neither. Ivy is the least bad. Both sound dreary!
