This was my top choice for a girl but a close friend has just used for her daughter.

Looking for something classic that can be shortened. Any ideas?

Our top names were: Elizabeth, Isobel and Harriet. I would however chose the name you love. Elizabeth can be shortened in so many ways. I 100% wouldn't mind if a friend of mine chose the same name as me for any of mine. They all have conventional names so it is partly expected they'll be others (although in reality surprisingly they are all the only ones with their names at their school!)

Good luck.

Elizabeth nn Bess, Bessie or Eliza?

Tess/Tessa
Jess/Jessa

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/01/2020 18:12

Eleanor is beautiful too.

Pegase · 02/01/2020 18:31

Harriet nn Hattie I like. I teach too many Eleanors to feel like I could choose that name. Find out sex on Saturday so after all this agonising it will probably be a boy Grin

Being a teacher must be awful when you get pregnant, so many names are ruled out.

If you have a boy just pick Matthew, it is the best boys name.

Skyejuly · 02/01/2020 19:29

Bethan?

Exitstrategist · 02/01/2020 19:31

Grinchly · 02/01/2020 19:49

Call her Elizabeth and be done with it.
It's a fabulous name.
Get beyond this daft ness of being unique or stealing names. It's so silly.
She will be your beautiful unique little Elizabeth . Smile

daisypond · 02/01/2020 19:52

There are very few names that I think have the same length of history behind them as Elizabeth. Margaret, Catherine, Jane, Mary and Anne are the only ones I can really think of. Is Anna any good? It traditionally shortens to Nan. Mary has nice diminutives, like Molly and Polly.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 02/01/2020 19:56

Arabella - Belle/Bella/Beebee
Meredith - Dee/Ditsy/Merry
Sophia - Fifi
Lillianna - Lily
Theodora - Teddy/ Thea

Grinchly · 02/01/2020 19:57

And NO pre ordained Nick names.

They should be organic, not contrived.

I have, and have always insisted upon my four syllable first name.

If people have no time to enunciate in two seconds the last three syllables of my beautiful first name, then frankly, I have no time for them.

I know of an Elsbeth (as opposed to Elspeth). Seeing as you like Beth but not Bethany, is this an option OP?
