We are expecting our 1st baby - bit of an unexpected miracle after many miscarriages. (1 miscarriage was at 4 months preg.)
Now am 8m preg and finally looking at names. We are really stuck on a boy’s name.
For a girl, we both like : Clara Florence
For a boy, I like Rowan Alexander but DH not keen...I even thought of Raymond after my late Grandfather but DH says it’s too dated.
I personally don’t like the names : Theo, Alfie, Archie, Finn, Arthur, Sam, Max, Ben, Toby.
We prefer mainly traditional names but open to ideas as we have no idea!

Help! Please! Grin

We have Ray/Raymond on our list, I think its due a comeback! Its lovely. Sophie Ellis Bexter has a boy called Ray!

MrsBertBibby · 01/01/2020 13:15

Congrats.

Alexander is a great name, shame your H isn't keen. Rowan is very popular and will date I suspect. Not keen myself.

Robert. Really underused, and a fantastic name with good nicks.
Conrad. Very unusual and I love it.
Joseph. Bit more mainstream, but a handsome, solid name.

Grufallisfriend · 01/01/2020 13:18

I really like Clara!

For a boy how about
Quentin
Marcus
Dominic

FluffyEggsontoast · 01/01/2020 13:23

Clara is a lovely girls name.

Rowan is a top 100 girls name in Scotland (and climbing massively up the charts) but doesn’t feature in the boys’ lists. I know it’s different in England though. But even over in a England, I know both girls and boys with this name, it’s become very popular but my main problem with the name is that it’s almost identical to the fastest rising boys’ name from 2018, RoMan (with an M). It’ll be top 10 soon on current trajectory . There’s 2 Roman’s and a Rowan at our small local nursery and they all get mixed up. A few years ago this wouldn’t have been a problem. I agree with your DH. When there’s so many lovely names to pick from, I’d avoid a name that’s so ripe for confusion with the fastest rising boys name

Traditional name ideas for you:

Peter
Barnaby
Seth
Christopher (nickname Kit)
Laurence (nickname Laurie)
Eli
Miles
Percy
Angus

Ps. Huge congratulations on your pregnancy. I also struggled to get pregnant so I can relate to how you feel ❤️

Mammyloveswine · 01/01/2020 13:25

I really like Robert!

On our lists (2 boys!) we had:

Noah

Jude
Bertie
Gabriel
Edward (nn Teddy)
Elijah
Joseph (I love Joseph!)
Jack
Johnny

FluffyEggsontoast · 01/01/2020 13:25

How about Nathan (nickname Nate)

Mammyloveswine · 01/01/2020 13:25

Oooh I love Peter too!

Mammyloveswine · 01/01/2020 13:31

Ooh Nathaniel is lovely as is Sebastian!

I love Jonah too.

And Daniel!

Whatsyourflava · 01/01/2020 13:32

Congratulations on your pregnancy. You must be over the moon, what a nightmare you’ve had.

Clara Florence is gorgeous. I also like Cora. (Not that you’ve asked for girl suggestions?!)

Agree with your DH, I don’t like Rowan. Especially when you say you like “traditional” names. Rowan is not traditional in any way (quite the opposite IMO) and is now a uk top 100 name for the first time in history so is very likely to date and quickly (I’m sure “Darren” and “Sharon” sounded ok in the 70s and 80s! That’s the type of category I think of with this name, sorry!). I don’t like the inevitable nickname Row (sounds unfinished) and seen as Roman (with an M) is now booming, fastest rising name and showing no signs of slowing down (famous YouTuber with 5 million followers called Roman, Roman Kemp on I’m a Celeb etc etc), I’d choose a name that won’t get muddled up and stands on its own right.

If you’re wanting something traditional, I agree that names like Nathan, Christopher, Peter might be good. Even more modern sounding named like Caleb, Casper and Ezra have a lot of history behind them. How about Vincent (nickname Vince) or Jack?

Whatsyourflava · 01/01/2020 13:32

Michael? Mikey?

Flymetothestars · 01/01/2020 13:39

Congratulations

Clara Florence is lovely

Agree with your DH and don’t like Rowan. It’s the ultimate trendy name in my eyes and you’ve said you’d like something traditional. I don’t like the nickname Row nor all the different spellings I’ve come across Rowan, Rohan, Roan. Agree that the fact Roman (with an M) was the fastest rising boys name last year does put me off even more. I’ve always preferred Rowan as a girls name though anyway.

Ray (rather than Raymond) is actually ok. How about Wilf(red) or Sid(ney) as traditional options? Otto? I love Christopher (Kit) and Barnaby. Also love Daniel and Peter

PlantPotting · 01/01/2020 13:49

I love both the names Clara and Florence! Glad you’ve managed to agree on a girls’ name

My baby daughter is called Rowan by the way! I do still like the name but sort of wish I’d come to Mumsnet for advice before naming her 🙈 I hadn’t anticipated it would continually get shortened to Row by well meaning family members nor had I realised that Roman was last years fastest rising uk name and at the local baby group there’s 2 Roman’s and I have to say “Rowan with a W” which does irk me a little. I had to specify at the hospital recently too as people misheard. Famous Roman’s seem to be springing up everywhere so the name will continue to boom I think 😩!! Nevermind it’s not the end of the world and she has two middle names to fall back on.🤣 I’ll pick a less trendy name next time and come here first.

Some great suggestions here for traditional options. How about Hugo, Rupert, Robin, Billy, jamie

PlantPotting · 01/01/2020 13:50

Does your DH like Alexander? That’s as traditional and classic as they come

MikeUniformMike · 01/01/2020 13:54

I don't like Clara - much prefer Cara or Lara.
Rowan Alexander is really nice but Raymond Alexander is fab.

I like traditional names like Michael, David, Peter etc.

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 01/01/2020 13:58

George

redwoodmazza · 01/01/2020 14:12

Our neighbour had her baby this morning!!!! New Year baby!
He's Alexander Christopher. I love their choice.

IckleBear · 01/01/2020 17:30

Daniel James
Magnus George

CaramelMama · 01/01/2020 17:47

If your husband doesnt like them too dated try playing with the spelling to become more modern.

Instead of Ray try Rae or Rai
You can also use a mixture of traditional names to be more modern. My friend called her son Jayrone after a mixture of thier names Jaylee and Tyrone.

Thomas or Benjamin are nice traditional names. I also think some names deserve a comback like Ray and Ian or Fredrick

BigusBumus · 01/01/2020 17:58

Miles or Rex

user1493494961 · 02/01/2020 09:16

Use Raymond as a middle name (please don't mangle the spelling to make it 'modern').

Carolemia · 04/01/2020 03:48

We have agreed upon Alexander Michael for a boy, still keen on Clara Florence for a girl so let’s see what we get! Thanks all!
