Help for my sister

DSis is only 20w this week so has a long time to go. But she and her DH are on TOTALLY different pages re names, she’s starting to worry.

I empathise because DH and I were also completely diametrically opposes. We came across one name that we could come together when we named our son in Nov. I found this site helpful in finding that name so hope it’ll help DSis.

They ‘suspect’ a boy, but don’t know sex.

DSis likes Joe (not Joseph!), Nathan, Oscar for a boy. BIL likes Achilles, Hector and Axel for a boy!

For a girl, DSis likes Pepper and Michaela. BIL only likes Roma (his grandmother’s name-she’s dying atm and will likely not make it to the birth).

Anyone inspired enough to suggest anything that might meet I the middle here...?!

In my experience, by the time a man has witnessed a woman give birth, he’ll let her name the baby anything she likes. Your sister has no need to worry! 😉

pinkyredrose · 27/12/2019 08:01

Pepper? Achilles? Dear God. Try to steer them into something halfway decent would you.

BelfastNonBlonde · 27/12/2019 08:09

I mean they are both picking such out there names no wonder they can’t agree..! I wouldn’t agree to ANY of those!

Think they both need to be a bit more reasonable with their options first - maybe a list of top 100 names or something and go from there?

Roma can be a middle name surely..

devilishlygood · 27/12/2019 08:09

Halfway decent?? Don’t be rude, thanks.

Or else they just keep listing names on their own until the first one matches..

rainbowstardrops · 27/12/2019 08:13

Pepper? As in pig? I'm hoping you mean Pipper.
I like Roma.

To be fair, your sister's boy choices are a bit run of the mill but the DH's are way too far in the opposite direction! I think some compromise in the middle is best and I like more unusual names!

OceanSunFish · 27/12/2019 08:15

If it's a girl, does his grandmother have a middle name? Or how about Romilly, Romy, Rosemary or Rosalie (all nicer than Roma IMO, but still a nod to his dying grandmother)?

For a boy - Benjamin? Sebastian? Fraser? Edward?

devilishlygood · 27/12/2019 08:15

@funmummy48 I had hedged my bets on this, but my sister and BIL are incredibly stubborn 😬

Your BIL sounds very into his Greek mythology!
Penelope (Penny)
Phoebe
Cassandra
Thalia
Daphne
Agree Roma is easy to compromise as a middle name.

Boys are harder
Jason
Alexander

Tbh they have both chosen some names that are difficult to compromise on if you dislike them! I suggest a A-Z book of baby names, they both make a list of all the names they would consider, and see what matches!

Boireannachlaidir · 27/12/2019 08:30

There's no middle ground with the names you've posted. Why not suggest your dsis registers as MN is so useful for advice. Hopefully she will get some alternative suggestions. They may not listen to any from you as they're in such disagreement.

justilou1 · 27/12/2019 08:40

Clio Zoe Antigone Thea Thalia Hestia Hester Delphi
Hector is a great name! Harris Wulfric Roderick Alaric Lysander

Modernhistorybuff · 27/12/2019 16:23

I don't like Roma at all but as a mn it would work. Otherwise how about Romilly as a compromise. I'm sorry but your sister's choices are awful for a girl.
Hector is great. And not a million miles from Oscar. Maybe they could concentrate on thinking of names which sound similar?

ballsdeep · 27/12/2019 16:27

Pepper? Omg she'll forever be called pepper pig. And achilles?
Roma is preferable and that's saying something

MikeUniformMike · 27/12/2019 16:29

Joe (not Joseph!) - ok
Nathan - not keen but I know a nice one
Oscar - not keen
Achilles - just no
Hector - not keen, but I like Horatio
Axel - yeah, why not

Pepper - Peppa Pig
Michaela - not keen, Mickey is sweet though
Roma - too close to Aroma, and Roma might be a bit dodgy because of cultural appropriation type stuff

PrincessHoneysuckle · 27/12/2019 16:35

Roma or joe dont like the rest.Achilles?! What the actual fuck

PrincessHoneysuckle · 27/12/2019 16:36

@devilishlygood tell your sister to Google Pepper from American Horror Story Grin

PlantPotting · 27/12/2019 17:17

Axel is very downmarket sounding sorry

Nathan is really nice and underused

Pepper is awful sorry

PlantPotting · 27/12/2019 17:18

How about Aurora nickname Rory (similar you Roma)

Or Roxanna/Roxanne ?

For boys how about Rudy/Rudi? Barnaby? Otis? Wilfred? Kit?

hannahfaith · 27/12/2019 19:59

agree with previous posters Romilly would be cute for a girl and could always be nn Roma as a nod to his grandmother - your sister seems to like obscure names and Romilly may please her as well.
Axel isn't bad at all but I think Achilles might be a little too far out there (think of a 16 year old - already angsty don't need to give him such a bold name and give him more to be angry about)
For boys I'd suggest Evander, Alec, Atticus, Bastian, Zale, even Apollo has a more modern sound to it while still having that Greek connection like Achilles.
