French girl name Capucine in England?

ZazieMetro · 26/12/2019 18:33

I’m French living in England, and I have always loved the name Capucine for a girl. It’s a flower name, quite popular in France, but we’re not sure how it will work over here.

What do you think, please? Would you know how to pronounce it and do you like it?

Capuchine is utterly beautiful - I love it.
My French friends have Camille, Violaine, Lucille and Beatrice.

They would eat her alive in school, sorry.
I don't know where you live but at all the schools I know there are childern from all cutures with unfamilar names. They are not bullied.

TatianaLarina · 28/12/2019 21:35

Go for it. Capucine is one of my favourite names. It’s very easy to pronounce in English.

I know a Céléstine.

Eleanor/e is very common in the U.K. sounds like Eeyore to me.

There were a handful at DS old school (loads of french families) and whereas I always thought ‘monkey’, DH would say ‘monk’.

No one seemed to take the mickey but the school was pretty international so there weren’t any Johns or Mary’s.

My DD is Beatrice and she prefers her name with a French accent!

Love Marthe/Martha and Clémentine but it will be Clementine in UK, accents always seem to be forgotten on my friend’s DD’s names.

Cappie is a cute nn. For anyone who remembers Greek.

SuePerb · 28/12/2019 21:42

I would think monkey too I'm afraid OP.

I know a Delphine who lives in London (with french parents)- what about that?

I also know a Lorraine and that sounds lovely with a french accent!

JingleCatJingle · 28/12/2019 21:43

Please don’t do this.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 28/12/2019 21:58

Severine is lovely. But grownup for a small child.
Margot is great, but likely to end up as a mixture of Marguerite, Maggie, Daisy, Marg.
Eleanor is fab and what a role model! (Of Aquitaine )

TatianaLarina · 28/12/2019 22:07

All the people who think monkey, coffee or monks before they think of the French name do so because they are not familiar with it.

If you’re familiar with it the first thing you think of when you see the name - is the name.

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 28/12/2019 22:12

I move Clémentine but I’m biased as I have one! What about Constance?

Onceuponatimethen · 29/12/2019 09:20

Tatiana, I agree with that but we do often interact with people when they don’t know the way our names are pronounced. So eg until corrected future job interviewer will think monkey/coffee

TatianaLarina · 29/12/2019 10:29

Not sure what the problem with a coffee/monk association is.

Lordfrontpaw · 29/12/2019 10:52

At least it’s not a type of warthog or lizard. The monkeys are unbelievably cute.

Onceuponatimethen · 29/12/2019 11:00

I guess for me it’s the fact that it’s been shown your name influences people! But nowadays a lot of kids have one off names so interviewers will have to get used to things they’ve not seen before and hopefully will stop shortlisting bias towards names with which they have positive associations

Lordfrontpaw · 29/12/2019 11:02

As long as the surname isn’t Smith or McNulty. That would sound odd.

LizziesTwin · 29/12/2019 14:17

My d was at school with one who abbreviated it to Capi until her final 6 months when she decided to go with the full name. No bullying but this was a v international school in London so names from every country.

haggistramp · 29/12/2019 14:22

I think its a lovely name, dont worry about children bullying her. If she is going to be bullied, if its not her name it will be something else. I wouldnt choose my childs name based on other people's ignorance. Names are subjective and you will never find a name that will please everyone, so pick a name that is special to you.
