Rose (Shirley)?

Sounding out another name on here for DD2...
Have already asked about Rachel, Gemma and Elaine, all 3 are still on the list.
But think we want the middle to be Shirley as it is a family name - both Grans name and my middle.
Thoughts are we maybe need a more popular first name to balance this.
Sister to Louise Catherine.
Soo what do you all think to Rose Shirley??

I think with the S sounds it's quite hard to say. Rose is gorgeous though. Smile

Poorolddaddypig · 24/12/2019 07:39

Rose is lovely! I don’t like Shirley though, very dated but not in a good way

donquixotedelamancha · 24/12/2019 07:41

Shirley not.

(I'll get my coat)

Rachel is the best from your list imo. I did meet a small Elaine last week though, quite refreshing.

Rose is everywhere at the moment.

Cookit · 24/12/2019 10:02

Rose is lovely. It doesn’t particularly go with Shirley but then little does as it’s not the best name (Shirley that is) although obviously it’s meaningful to you so that’s what’s important.
How often you really say firstname middle name together? My 3 year old asked what his middle name was the other week. It was the first time I’d said his middle name since announcing him I think!

Eliane Shirley is far, far too much.

jfoyo26 · 24/12/2019 12:51

I know people don't particularly like Shirley...It's my middle, can't say I've ever had a compliment on it but it is very meaningful to me to honour both my grandparents and use it. I do not like any of the 3 other names with Shirley. I think it needs a more modern and popular first. Any suggestions you think flow well/OK with Shirley are welcomed too?

Rose Shirley is nice. Shirley is a bit dated but it's pretty enough and it is meaningful.

bridgetreilly · 24/12/2019 18:53

Rosamund Shirley
Rosanna Shirley
Rosalind Shirley

Easier to say and more options as she grows up. But you can still call her Rose.

bridgetreilly · 24/12/2019 18:56

If youre considering something other than Rose, how about:

Emma Shirley
Eleanor Shirley
Ava Shirley
Annabel Shirley
Caroline Shirley

Astronica · 25/12/2019 04:04

I really like Rose Shirley. Shirley is sweet vintage these days and very sweet with the lovely Rose. The z end sound and Sh beginning are unusual together but I don't mind it.

Dinosauraddict · 25/12/2019 04:57

I think @bridgetreilly has nailed it with Rosalind/Rosanna etc. Can call her Rose as nn all the time, but gives her more formal options too.
Btw I love Shirley, particular as a huge Anne of Green Gables fan. Although I really dislike Elaine.

Spikeyball · 25/12/2019 07:41

If you want Rose Shirley then go with it. I also like Rachel from your original 3.

GaaaaarlicBread · 25/12/2019 17:39

How about
Florence Shirley?

percheron67 · 25/12/2019 22:10

Rose is beautiful. I worked with a Shirley a long while ago. She was the most narcissistic. temperamental and spiteful person I have worked with. I can never hear the name without a shudder!

DramaAlpaca · 26/12/2019 01:12

Rose Shirley is fine.

However, I'm not mad on Louise and Rose together, the endings are too similar.

MillicentMartha · 26/12/2019 01:18

How about Rosa Shirley? It avoids the ‘z’ ‘sh’ sounds right next to each other and could be shortened to Rose more naturally than Rosalind which is pronounced Roz at the beginning.

DramaAlpaca · 26/12/2019 01:51

Ooh, Rosa Shirley is very nice.

Astronica · 26/12/2019 02:57

I think Rose, Gemma and Elaine are all good and sound appealing with Shirley in the middle. While I really like Rachel I don't think it flows well with Shirley (and just feels like an entirely different kind on name).

JudgeMeNot · 26/12/2019 06:44

Agree with Rosanna Shirley. Flows better than Rose Shirley

IckleBear · 26/12/2019 12:01

Rosa Shirley!

Wren Shirley
Violet Shirley
Edith Shirley
Ida Shirley

TheClausSeason · 26/12/2019 12:03

Too many s sounds. Rose _ Shirley? Use Shirley as a second middle name and give another middle to break it up?

solange79 · 26/12/2019 12:26

I love Rose Shirley. Shirley is awesome!
