Opinions on the name Oliver?
Will be Ollie for short

My fiancé prefers Theo which I do love too but I feel like my heart is set on Ollie!

I could of hated my popular name 'Chloe' but quite frankly I'd have to just get a grip I have watched my two little siblings go through school (one is 14, other is 7) and never had an Oliver in their classes

I think you get a slightly skewed opinion on MN boards as most of us are quite ‘into’ names on here and many may want something a bit different or yoonique 🤪. Out in the real world Oliver has been the most popular name for years and parents know this yet continue to choose it and so it obviously doesn’t bother them.

And you’re right @chloxox08 Oliver is far less used than it used to be. The annual numbers have reduced dramatically since 2010 when it peaked. It’s numbers have declined pretty massively each year since

I love Oliver! I like a good popular and classic name. My brother’s called it and never been one of 2 at anything he does and I’m he does everything.
Growing up my best friend and I shared a first name and it never bothered me so no it doesn't bother people, either way if it does stick a middle name in and use it so he’s Ollie Alexander or something, doesn’t have to be his surname.
My boyfriend is also a Tom, sharing a name with about half of the world, including his dad and has never been Tom F.

@Flymetothestars there is one year in one of my dcs' school with four Olivers in it. I was being literal.

There are also multiples of less common names, but Oliver obviously came to mind in the context of this thread.

I know it used to be veryyyy popular but since the name has been on the decline I'd take the chance I would think Theo is more popular for babies being born now! Love them both tho, I mean I could be pregnant with a girl so this thread may be useless after all

@TheJoxter I wouldn't be so sure. When my Oliver was in primary, he told me off for calling him it as his friend had called him Ollie the Wally with the shopping trolley

Yes, true. And if you express any negative views (boring, overused etc) all the Oliver mums are going to defend it

I have an Oliver who's 1 and haven't met another one at any of our baby groups etc. He's Ollie for a nn

On the other hand we know loads of babies with "less popular" or unique names because everyone wanted to avoid popular names like Oliver!

My 7 year old is Oliver - never Ollie, he doesn't like it haha.

He is in year 3 now but he's never had another Oliver in his class.

I didn't realise how popular it was but in my area it doesn't seem to be!

I'm not annoyed if people dislike the name - the only thing I thought was abit silly was not naming my future son a popular name incase he doesn't like it, when that could be the case for any name

P.s if you're unhappy about me posting a thread on a popular name then you can always scroll along and go on with your day. You don't actually have to come on the thread and moan

People are obsessed with having unique names now that they make up some absolutely dreadful crap to name their kids. Some of the suggestions you usually see on here are laughable in my opinion.

Go with your gut instinct.

We didn’t tell anyone (not even MN) what our names were and I’m so glad we didn’t, as once your baby is born no one is going to say “that’s a horrible name” when looking at said beautiful baby.

I was named a massively popular name from the time when I was born. My whole life there has anyway been someone else with the same name. It was actually the number one most popular name the year I was born!

There was 4 with my name in my classes all through primary school. A few at secondary and I’ve worked with a couple of women with the same name as me too.

Never been bothered by it!

However if I had been given an unusual name with a weird spelling I would be well fed up of explaining it to anyone I meet by now.

I know more babies called Hunter than Oliver

totally overdone and now sounds as average as say female equivalent Kate to me

Theo is nice too, but I prefer Oliver.

The people who are angry with me for liking Oliver + Theo because they're popular would flip out over my girls list that are all in the top 10 of 2018!😂 it's not too long til I find out the gender, I'm pretty convinced it's a boy though! Thanks all 💓

Great name. Ollie is a lovely nickname too.

But I'm siding with your fiance. I love, love, love Theo. It's what I wanted to call DD if we'd had a boy (DH wasn't a fan though - he wanted George).

Big deal about them being popular names. I'd sooner have a child with a name where there's more than one in a class than a unique, or worse 'yoonique', name.

I am probably the only person in the country that cringes at the name Oliver. Sorry

Prefer Theo to Oliver/Ollie, only because it is less common
