Nathan?

Hi,

I like Rowan, and Conor.
Husband really dislikes these names for some reason.
He has suggested Nathan which I do like but it's not my favourite.
Should I compromise?
We have been bickering for weeks! Will Nathan grow on me a bit more?
I'm not telling family as have had negative reactions to names in the past.

Which do you like best?

Many Thanks for your help x

I love Nathaniel with a nn of Nathan

Chirpychirpy3 · 17/11/2019 15:02

I really like Nathan. I prefer it to Conor and Rowan

LookAtWhatYouCouldHaveWon · 17/11/2019 15:03

I think out of all three Conor is best.

I feel Nathan is quite wet. Definitely meh. Rowan, i think of Mr Bean. I quite like Roan though.

DramaAlpaca · 17/11/2019 15:04

I love Nathan, Nathaniel & Nate.

I much prefer Nathan to Rowan.

I like Conor very much, but be warned that unless you are in Ireland everyone will spell it Connor. On a thread the other day, the OP mentioned having Conor on her list but in every reply posters spelled it Connor - which is not as nice, IMO.

MissHenty · 17/11/2019 16:47

I think Nathan is a great name! Love the potential nickname Nate which I think it cool.

Conor is a cool name - what don’t you like about it @Thinkingsticks

Rowan would have been a good name a couple of years ago but RoMan is the fastest rising boys’ name. It’s top 50 now but on current growth trajectory will be top 20/10 in next couple of years- the new Noah. There’s 2 RoMan and a RoWan at my sons small nursery ! The Rowan just gets called RoMan all the time, it would drive me mad. I don’t really like RoMan although Rome is a nicer nickname than the inevitable Row (Row Row) your boat.

Is there any other names on your shortlist?

How about

Miles
Eli
Ellis
Otto
Barnaby
Dexter
Sonny
Grayson
Otis
Ralph
Rupert

daisypond · 17/11/2019 17:07

Nathaniel is nice. Not so keen on Nathan.

Thinkingsticks · 17/11/2019 17:11

@misshenty

Thank you for your suggestions. I do like sonny! I really like Conor, but Husband really dislikes it. He has known a conor from school he did not like, also says there is a famous boxer named conor, he hates. So has bad connotations of the name. I don't have any, I just think it's a nice name!
I do like Nathan, I think it could be a grower. It's just not a name that has ever occurred to me or that I've ever given any though to before if you know what i mean! X

@Thinkingsticks

The only Nathan I know is 30yo ish, extremely handsome and cool. So I’m a bit biased but I have very good associations with the name. Can’t really believe I never even thought of it when I was naming DC. I think the name is great. Massively underused, strong and interesting

Trying to think of similar names - Tristan?

MikeUniformMike · 17/11/2019 18:38

Conor seems a bit dated. Nathan seems a bit downmarket.
Rowan is nice.

17caterpillars1mouse · 17/11/2019 18:48

I'm not a huge fan of Nathan but it's ni e enough, love Nathaniel though. I really like Rowan but not Connor. Have you considered Liam or Cormac? Seem like they might fit your taste

MissMarpletheMurderer · 17/11/2019 18:52

Ooh Nate is even better.

Thinkingsticks · 17/11/2019 19:20

Thank you for your feedback. I really appreciate your honesty, i do like Conor and Rowan slightly more than Nathan but I dislike the inevitable nicknames of 'row' and 'con'

@MissHenty i do like Tristan! But he said no straight away ☹

On the other hand I do like the shortening of Nathan to nate!

Possibly DH could call him Nathan and I can call him nate?!

@Thinkingsticks Nate is an amazing nickname! I really think the name Nathan is a grower.... give it a bit of time to sink in and I recon you’ll love it.

If you don’t like Row or Con then I probably wouldn’t pick those names

How about Ronnie? Ned? Casper? Eric?

Thinkingsticks · 17/11/2019 19:30

Yes i think I will, thank you all.

Big brothers are Luke and Isaac if that makes a difference, but I think all the names we have in mind for baby sound fine with bros names x

Leopardprintboots · 17/11/2019 19:38

I LOVE Nathan and Nate is a brilliant nickname if you wanted it. I also know a very cool Nathan but not met any recently.

I think all your names work well with Luke or Isaac OP- do you know for certain you’re having a boy this time?

I don’t really like Rowan anymore- because of the nickname Row and the confusion with Roman. I work in paediatrics with newborns and there’s a LOT of baby Romans being born this last year. Never used to hear the name RoMan much but it’s boomed!

How about

Cole
Grayson
Christopher (Kit)

Thinkingsticks · 17/11/2019 19:48

@leopardprintboots thank you for your feedback and suggestions, yes definetly a boy.
I didn't want anything too popular as Luke is one of about 30 in high school! And isaac has also become super popular now too but I still love the name. So that does discourage me from Rowan a bit tbh.
And I do like Nathan just not sure it's the one x

Ok that’s pretty key info you’ve given there.

I’d def focus on names that are on a downward trajectory then @Thinkingsticks. Both Nathan and Conor ARE on downward trajectories (Rowan/RoMan is def not! They are on a massive upswings!)

user1493494961 · 17/11/2019 22:03

Love Nathaniel, shortened to Nate.

Boobahs · 17/11/2019 22:15

We didn't really like Nathan or Nathaniel, so we called our baby Nate as his proper name Smile
