I’ve name changed for this as we aren’t telling anymore the name until baby is here.
I’m expecting a girl and we are pretty much set on the name Elizabeth. Do you think it’s a nice name? How many baby Elizabeth’s do you know and do they go by a nickname? Thanks

Thanks for all the positive comments. I was worried people would think it’s too Royal. I do love all the nicknames but we will probably just call her Elizabeth until she decides what she wants to be called.

It's not a name that dates. The diminutives tend to, but there are so many to choose from.
It's not too royal. There are probably more Elizabeths in an average British family tree.

It is nicest in it's full form and the diminutives tend to be trend-led.

Good solid name with plenty of good nn’s. I like Bette.
My old school friend Elizabeth was called Biff, which I like less!

MikeUniformMike · 13/11/2019 20:01

See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_(given_name) for variants and diminutives.
So many!

MikeUniformMike · 13/11/2019 20:07

Oh. I spotted one that's not on there - a welsh one that I love - Leusa.
Not very useful info if you are not Welsh as it's difficult to pronounce.

Omashu · 13/11/2019 20:16

I really don’t like it, never have! Think it’s frumpy.

Gribbie · 13/11/2019 20:33

It’s my name and I don’t like it. I think my problem is I never chose a nickname early enough. So I’m Liz by default which is just boring.

avocadochocolate · 13/11/2019 20:40

Love it...... it's one of those names that's never in the top 10 but never unpopular either. It's a timeless classic.

Mothersruin123 · 13/11/2019 20:41

Love it, but I'm biased as that's is my 5 year old daughter's name. Everyone calls her Betsy.

runoutofideasnow · 13/11/2019 20:52

I love Elizabeth.

Favourite nn's are; Lillibet (by family maybe?), Beth, Elle

DramaAlpaca · 13/11/2019 20:55

It's a beautiful, timeless, classic name.

BonBon411 · 14/11/2019 14:10

Elizabeth is a timeless classic.
I have a niece- Elizabeth Gray &
On my husband’s side Mary Elizabeth.
Elizabeth has many nn’s-Liz, Liza, Beth,
Betsy, Lily...
It is a stunning name choice as first or
middle name and flows so well with
many other names.

VenusClapTrap · 15/11/2019 07:36

Never liked it. Long, cumbersome and frumpy.

Itsacoldcoldwintersday · 15/11/2019 07:52

DD (16) has 3 in her year - one known as Lizzie and 2 called by the full name.
I know another who is 14 and known as Libby.

EleanorShellstrop100 · 15/11/2019 10:49

I really don’t like the sound of Elizabeth but think it’s worth it for all the amazing nickname potential

albus55 · 15/11/2019 16:33

I know one two year old who goes by Lizzie

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/11/2019 16:39

It's my Dd's middle, but she's recently started using it as her first name.
She finds people shorten it to Liz, though she prefers Elizabeth.

funmummy48 · 15/11/2019 16:41

It’s timeless and classic. Go for it!

dementedpixie · 15/11/2019 16:42

My mum is Elizabeth but is known as Elsie
My sister is Elizabeth and some shorten to Liz but I call her by her full name
My dd has Elizabeth as her middle name

cortex10 · 15/11/2019 16:47

DH was always keen on the name if we'd had a Dd. At the time I wasn't so keen - but love it now. Maybe one day for a DGd...

Vintagelovingmum · 15/11/2019 17:00

We've got an almost 2 year old called Elizabeth, I loved it because there are so many options for shorter names for it too, plus it's a family name, we call our daughter Ellie, I really loved effie as a nickname but we decided on Ellie

vickielisabeth · 15/11/2019 23:38

I like it, but I'd be put off using it as a first name because when the queen dies I imagine it will become very popular.

Pottedtree · 15/11/2019 23:42

We have an Elizabeth. She was itsy bitsy betsy as a baby and now is Ellie. It's a great timeless and international name.

Grandmi · 15/11/2019 23:46

My name is Elizabeth but have always been referred to as Lizzie. It’s a lovely name and very versatile. My son partner is expecting a girlie and I love the name Eliza . Definitely a timeless name .

Pongo123 · 17/11/2019 23:09

Elizabeth is such a good name and has the most nicknames of any name I can think of. It’s obviously a “heard of name” but not popular in terms of the modern definition of popular and is such a classic it will fit any era.
