Boys shortlist - thoughts please 😊

Afternoon folks!

I posted a few days ago about one of my favourite boys names for our little one (due in January). Had some really helpful comments, so thought I’d share our current shortlist for some thoughts?

Looking for a name that’s unusual but not absurd. Would welcome other suggestions too - feel like I’ve exhausted my thinking!

Current list of favourites:

• Fabian
• Rufus
• Gabriel
• Raphael
• Nikolai

Other strong contenders (but could be middle name):

• Micah
• Marius
• Griffin

With the exception of Fabian & Marius I like your boys list, but don't think any of them tick the unusual box. Stand out favourites are Gabriel and Rufus. Micah is great as well.

I'd steer clear of Griffin.

Theodore and Donovan are lovely,
But Diggory?

Whats wrong with Diggory? It's a classic if very underused name

I like Fabian and Marius best.

Oh I love Raphael! Gorgeous name, was considering that one too for my DS.

May I add a suggestion? Another archangel to stay on topic.

Castiel - very unusual name but I loved it!
If you Google it, you will find it mostly linked to thr TV series Supernatural (also highly recommended btw).

• Rufus - ok but not my taste
• Gabriel - Gay, Gabby, Gabes? no
• Raphael - no. Sorry but it's c*vy
• Nikolai - too foreign?Nicholas is ok

• Marius - no
• Griffin - like it a lot

Not Nick Griffin please.

Gabriel Griffin has a nice ring to it imo.

Rufus was a strong front runner when we were trying to decide on a boy's name.

Micah is also a nice name. Not to my taste, but still a good choice if you like it.

Not a fan of the other options.

Raphael! Love love love it.

Gabriel Griffin is so good - use that!!

I love Nicholas, but not Nikolai (unless you're Russian).

Only on Mumsnet would these names not be considered unusual I like Theodore and Raphael

Fabian - ok, but reminds me of the Fabian Society.

• Gabriel - alright but not my favourite from your list
• Raphael - ok
• Nikolai - NO. It’s Carcescu’s firs time name. Similar to Adolf or Saddam as a name.

Other strong contenders (but could be middle name):

• Marius - bit feeble sounding
• Griffin - nice

LOVE Fabian, Rufus, Gabriel and Raphael - sorry, not very helpful! Also like Micah from the second list (but I wouldn’t use t as a middle name with either Gabriel or Raphael as might be too biblical?)

Thanks so much for the thoughts and got some great suggestions, too! Have just done a quick tally and Gabriel is currently coming out on top, followed closely by Fabian, and then Raphael next... 🤷🏼‍♀️ x
