I love this name for a girl. DP is coming round to it as well. DM loves it.
But I'm constantly getting bad reactions from friends - enough to have slightly put me off every time.

I appreciate that it's a bit out there but I just think it's gorgeous.

Anyone else out there agreeing with me? Or should I stay put off?

OP posts:

Get a cat and call it Story. All children are completely unique without saddling them with not-names or made up hybrid misspelt shyte (see what I did there?!)

I had always loved Georgia, for personal reasons, until someone I knew called their daughter Jorja. FFS what a mess.

Children aren’t for ‘cool’ and unless you’re a celeb who doesn’t GIF that everyone’s judging them for the naff name, then assumed you’ll be judged too. As will the child.

AdaColeman · 07/11/2019 20:06

How did you come across this name? Did you perhaps mishear Tori, a nn for Victoria?

byefeliciabye · 07/11/2019 20:22

I like it, although I like unusual names. Both my children have names that many a Mumsnetter would disapprove of. But I honestly couldn't care less.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 07/11/2019 20:27

ROFL at Jorja!

YourOpinionIsNoted · 07/11/2019 20:28

Oh god, don't.
It's not a name.
People will assume you (and she) are massive chavs.
She will have to repeat her name to every new person she meets for her entire life.
People will mishear and assume it's Tori - because that is at least a recognised name.
If she's overweight she'd be the never ending story.

You don't have to call her Amelia or Eva or Grace. Pick an an unusual name. But pick a name!

Nagsnovalballs · 07/11/2019 20:28

What’s the story jackanory? Aka getting people to fess up when they drink in a game of never have I ever.

Luckingfovely · 07/11/2019 20:31

Yeah, it's a really really bad idea. Left field is good, utterly ridiculous is not. Let go and find something else!

YourOpinionIsNoted · 07/11/2019 20:33

names.darkgreener.com/

Use this to find unusual names, OP, if that's what you're after. It's a brilliant tool!

DidntLikeRugbyAnyway · 07/11/2019 20:34

It’s not a name.

megletthesecond · 07/11/2019 20:36

No.
I like unusual names but it's a bit meh.

Omashu · 07/11/2019 20:38

@firstimemamma Story is a name though so it is the same thing! As I said earlier I know a 30 year old Story. All names were made up once upon a time. Just because Story isn’t a popular name it doesn’t mean it isn’t one, as well as a word.

TheLovelyOtherDinosaur · 07/11/2019 20:40

I have heard a little girl named Astoria being called ‘Story’ for short. I much prefer that.

experimentnumber626 · 07/11/2019 20:47

I like it.

hiredandsqueak · 07/11/2019 20:51

No it's awful.

firstimemamma · 07/11/2019 20:52

@Omashu I don't think you read my post correctly - I never said story isn't a name and I fully accept the 30 year old story thing that you mentioned. I simply said it isn't a common / widely accepted name, which no-one can argue with really.

"Story isn’t a popular name it doesn’t mean it isn’t one, as well as a word."

I couldn't agree more with the above. Story is a name and a word, as is mark. But I think out of story and mark I know who will have a hard time over their name (and it ain't mark!)

Not going to post any more on this as I don't like to argue especially on online forums. I hope we can respectfully agree to disagree.

mathanxiety · 07/11/2019 20:54

It's better than Ass for short, TheLovelyOtherDinosaur.

HalfManHalfLabrador · 07/11/2019 20:57

Ridiculous

Ohffs66 · 07/11/2019 20:58

I know someone who called their daughter this (although I think the spelling was Storie). I really like it.

DontLettuceBrexitLettuceRomain · 07/11/2019 21:14

Do you hate your child?

Jj2431 · 07/11/2019 21:30

One of the most ridiculous names I've ever heard and that's because it isn't a name.

Hecateh · 07/11/2019 21:38

My sister ran a safari park in Kenya for a few years. Many people in those areas choose names from books - or should I say catalogues. There are kids named 'wingnut', 'Carburettor' and even 'Sump'.

I generally either like or am accepting of 'names' but this really doesn't work for me.

'Come on Story, tell us a story'

'Ooh Story, don't tell stories' etc etc

In the end it is clearly your choice but I wouldn't recommend it.

siriusblackthemischieviouscat · 07/11/2019 21:46

No, its not a name and I agree with pp who says it sounds like a Kardashian name.

Bunnyfuller · 07/11/2019 22:23

@siriusblackthemischieviouscat

I think some people WANT their kids with Kardashian-type names.

I saw one of those mums posing with her 11 yr old and 8 yr old. Both kids had ‘the eye —slugs— brows. There is no hope for this country.

Omashu · 07/11/2019 22:23

@firstimemamma sorry if I came across as argumentative! That wasn’t my intention, its just tricky with written word sometimes.

EleanorShellstrop100 · 08/11/2019 10:19

I think it’s lovely. Don’t ask for advice on Mumsnet unless you’re naming your daughter Catherine or Constance.
