35 weeks pregnant and have decided on the name Aria.
Had only told my children the name. But the other day my mother asked if we had picked a name and they told her.
Her comment was "EURGH! Where have you dug that name up from"
It has been bugging me all week. I'm so annoyed. Its put me off the name and I know it shouldn't.

It’s a gorgeous name. Once your mum hears it a few times she’ll love it too

It’s magical and beautiful yet strong. Use it x

coffeeeandtv · 04/11/2019 14:23

Both my mil and SiL said they hated the name I had chosen for my second son... both thought it was reasonable to comment that it was a 'stupid name'. I called it him out of spite as I genuinely love the name and it suits him so much he couldn't be called anything else.
Please call your beautiful baby by your chosen name, I think it's lovely fwiw.

Winterdaysarehere · 04/11/2019 14:24

Spent years and many dc 's worth of negative comments. Ignore op..
This is my Aria btw!!

This is why you never tell anyone the name until the baby has arrived.

Gottobefree · 04/11/2019 14:25

It's a beautiful name ! Stick to your guns x

Littledidsheknow · 04/11/2019 14:25

It's a lovely name. Your DM will get used to it.

LucileDuplessis · 04/11/2019 14:27

Some people of our parents' generation struggle with any non traditional names. Ignore her and carry on.

Pippilangstrumpfi · 04/11/2019 14:36

Personally I do value my mother's opinion and it would make me think twice about my choice.

However if you're 100% sure you love the name then ignore her opinions.

And it shouldn't matter what we (random internet users) think about Ava.

diddlediddle · 04/11/2019 14:44

Aria is a bit naff though. It's very of the moment and steeply gaining popularity, and very similar to lots of other popular names. Maybe she's got a point?

However if you are set on it then who gives a toss what she thinks? If anyone said they didn't like my name I wouldn't care because I am clear in my own mind on it.

Strangerthingshere · 04/11/2019 14:48

My mum did the same thing. Was frustrating because we are actually really close. If she does it again just say that it is up to you, and you like the name. I said this to my mum and a few days later she casually mentioned in conversation that she was sorry, she must've realised. She probably didn't mean any harm, everyone has different tastes.

TheReluctantCountess · 04/11/2019 14:51

Maybe it’s for the best that this has happened, as you would probably be even more hurt had this happened once the baby is born.
If it’s put you off the name, you have time to chose another.

Spied · 04/11/2019 14:55

It would make me love it even more.
Say it as often as you can when she's in earshot.

flopsytheflatcat · 04/11/2019 14:58

Beautiful name! Not everyone likes the same names otherwise we'd all be called the same!

RoseToes · 04/11/2019 15:01

I think it’s a beautiful name, I’d ignore them if you love it.

CatSmize · 04/11/2019 15:08

Ignore. It's a gorgeous name and I think your DM's reaction was extremely rude!

rainbowconfetti · 04/11/2019 15:11

Your own mother Shock

She sounds horrible. Is she normally like that?

SilverySurfer · 04/11/2019 15:12

An aria is a solo sung in an opera, when did it become a name?

Hmm
Sleepinglemon · 04/11/2019 15:27

My MIL comments negatively on every name we mention. We've stopped talking to her about it. I'm due in 2 weeks and she's a bit miffed now that we won't tell her the name, but hoping she won't be as rude about it when the baby is actually here. She'd only be happy if we went for a Charlotte, Emily, Hannah type name. Lovely names, but not our bag.

mumof2masterofnone · 04/11/2019 15:38

My mum and dad were very vocal about the fact they hated DD2 name... I called it her anyway as it was none of their business.

I really don't see why people comment negatively on a name. Calling it naff? It's very unkind.

ilovemykids5 · 04/11/2019 15:38

@rainbowconfetti

No she isn't normally that's why it's really annoyed me.

It’s a gorgeous name. I think you’ll really regret it if you don’t use it. Has your mum made any of her own suggestions then? What name would she be happy with do you think?

NotAClue101 · 04/11/2019 15:58

No one likes the name I chose for my son, I still called him it, and we get constant compliments on it now and how unusual it is...some people don't like it still, but that's fine....me and his daddy love it and he suits it!
Aria is a beautiful name. My friend has an aria, and I thought it was such a pretty name

ilovemykids5 · 04/11/2019 16:27

@Leopardprintboots

As soon as I found out I was pregnant it was the name I loved.

She wants me to call her Robyn 🙄.

MissHenty · 04/11/2019 16:33

I prefer Aria to Roby

Robin I like for a boys’ name

Aria is lovely ❤️
