What do people think of Katie for a girl? Thanks x

I think it’s a nice name but the overuse of Kate/Katie/Katherine in the 80s means it’ll sound quite dated on a child nowerdays as all the other children will say their mum or their auntie is called Kate or Katie. And those mums/aunties will all be 40 so the child might feel a bit frumpy - does that make sense? Because the name is barely used nowerdays. Same with Sarah for example

I think it would be like me (currently aged 34) being called Susan or something at school. Yes it would have been an unusual name for a ten year old but it would be the mums and dinner lady’s name.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 04/11/2019 13:34

My DC late teens/early 20's and they all three have loads of friends called katie.

Def was very very very common/popular/over used in that generation but I don't know many younger ones.

Maybe you can revive it...

Antigonads · 04/11/2019 13:37

There were 8 girls with a variation of Catherine in my year group at school. I am 60.

One of my friend's has a 19 year old Katy.

It's a timeless name.

Screamqueenz · 04/11/2019 13:37

I love it, but what about Catherine / Katherine or Katrina and nickname Katie?

ErrolTheDragon · 04/11/2019 13:37

It's one of those classics which never goes away, and which doesn't pigeonhole you in any way.

The names which date are ones which are only common for one or two generations and then lapse - the current 'granny' names in vogue again.

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 04/11/2019 13:40

I expect it to make a gradual comeback what with Kate Middleton.

Katie is a very 80’s name though. But lovely.

neonglow · 04/11/2019 13:42

I think it’s beautiful and classic, also not that overused with babies/kids today

Leopardprintboots · 04/11/2019 13:51

@ErrolTheDragon you say it’s one of those classics that never goes away but actually the name Kate is almost extinct for babies now and Katie is about to leave the top 200 so is very rare. Kate/Katie is not a true classic name like Sophie or Emma or Victoria that is still fairly mainstream today. A little girl called Kate or Katie at school won’t have the same name as anyone else in their school but will have the same name as loads of her friends’ ageing frumpy mothers 😆 . It would be like a 30 year old nowerdays growing up being called Sue or Susan at school in the 80s. It would feel very very uncool! I know us mums like to see ourselves as cool but our kids won’t think that unfortunately when they’re at school

Pippilangstrumpfi · 04/11/2019 13:54

I know at least 10 Katies of different ages. I also know a dog called Katie. It's a little dull imo.

Harvey3 · 04/11/2019 14:02

I like it! Think it suits all ages and is a pretty name

mogtheexcellent · 04/11/2019 14:21

Theres a Katie in my daughters class. She is an Emma. As far as I am aware no one has spelt their names wrong yet. Emilee on the other hand...

Tana433 · 04/11/2019 14:30

I love the name. My DD is Katie Marie. She is 26 now and i didnt know any Katies when i was pregnant with her but, by the time she got to primary school (1997) there seemed to be quite a few!

Pippilangstrumpfi · 04/11/2019 14:32

Kate is almost extinct for babies now and Katie is about to leave the top 200 so is very rare

Isn't that because all the Kates and Katies are officially Katherine/Catherine/Katharine/Kathryn?!

crustycrab · 04/11/2019 14:35

@dirtyrottenscoundrel "I expect it to make a gradual comeback what with Kate Middleton."

How gradual? She's not exactly new to the "scene". You do know it's almost 20 years since she met Prince William and her surname hasn't been Middleton for many years? Wink

MilkItTilITurnItIntoCheese · 04/11/2019 14:39

I have a 9 year old Katie. Her birth certificate says Katherine. My 14 year old had a Katy in her year at Primary. They are still about - just not as common as when I (mid 40’s) was at school (had 3 in my class!)

CharitySchmarity · 04/11/2019 15:36

You do know it's almost 20 years since she met Prince William and her surname hasn't been Middleton for many years?

What's more, she is on record as saying that she prefers Catherine.

Katie is not one of my absolute favourites but I like rather than dislike it I don't think it sounds embarrassingly dated, but I do think it sounds like a little girl's name, so I would probably choose some variation on Catherine as a full name and Katie for short. The one adult I know who has Katie as her full official name usually goes by Kate now.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/11/2019 15:51

I mean put more that C/Katherine is a classic - imo always best to put a full name on the birth certificate then the child can decide on which version they prefer eventually. 'Kate' as a nickname goes back centuries.

Fuckenstein · 04/11/2019 15:56

I have an 12 year old Katie, I love it.

I didn't realise until I joined mumsnet that is was a shirt version of Catherine etc.

Cheesey21 · 04/11/2019 16:07

I'm a Katie (late 20's) and hate that people think my full name is C/Katherine 🙈

Applepieco · 04/11/2019 16:12

I have an 8 yr old Kate. Love the name. No other Kate in her class - and no mums called Katie/Kate! People often comment on what a lovely name it is.

MissHenty · 04/11/2019 16:29

Back in the 80s there was always about 3/4 or more Kate/Katie’s in every class unfortunately. Sarah was the number 1 name statistically but I think if you added up the Kate and Katie’s (which were ranked as two separate names), those numbers would actually surpass the numbers for Sarah.

I agree with @Leopardprintboots - Kate and Katie are dated but in a bad way. Names like Elsie, Mable and Sylvia are dated in a way they make you think of black and white glamorous photos and husbands off at war and romantic films.

Names like Kate/Katie and Sarah that practically dropped off the planet over the last decade are dated in a bad way (unlike names like Sophie and Emily which were popular in the 80s BUT continue to be popular today). “Katie” or “Kate” will be the name of loads of your daughters’ friends’ mums. The old grey and saggy 40+Yo Mums that stand at the school gates (and I include myself in this- I know I sound like a horrible human but that’s the way I looked at mums at the school gates growing up). I must say a lot of my school friends mums were either called Sue or Jane and I think a child in the 80s would have felt very unglamorous with those types of dated name.
Perhaps Katie could be a middle name?

OnlineShopping · 04/11/2019 16:38

I know four C/Katherines under the age of five so it’s not just an old person’s name at all and is quite appropriate to have and use Katie as a nickname. It’s not an overly exciting name but it is a classic that is timeless.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 04/11/2019 16:40

I am a Katie and I have always loved my name 😊

MissHenty · 04/11/2019 16:50

There was only 104 Catherine’s and 113 Katherine’s babies born last year. Both Katherine and Catherine are almost outside the UK top 500 names now so are extremely rare.

If you look at the name graphs Catherine and Katherine were more popular 10+ years ago but have declined every year since then and are going to disappear at this rate.

Almost every Katie or Kate that you’re daughter will know of will be an ageing mother unfortunately. Even Kate Middleton won’t look the same in ten years when your daughter becomes more aware of her name. It’ll feel very very dated but it’s your choice xxx

AdelaideK · 04/11/2019 16:53

I think it's pretty boring. There's zillions around of all different ages.
