What do people think of Katie for a girl? Thanks x

So much ageism on this thread! 40 something mums being stereotyped as "frumpy", "grey" and "saggy". I'm a 40 something mum and am none of those things, and neither are the hundreds of other 40 something mums I know!

Where's the sisterhood?!

Sorry for the hijack OP, I think it's a classic name.

theoffice101 · 04/11/2019 17:06

Very boring. I'm in my twenties and I know/know of lots of similar age women with this name.
I don't like it mainly because every Katie I know personally isn't very nice 😂

NotMaryWhitehouse · 04/11/2019 17:13

@theoffice101 you'd like me, I'm great Grin

MelGrange · 04/11/2019 17:16

I think it’s lively and timeless. Would go for Katherine or Catherine though on the birth certificate and shorten it day to day.

Cate is a more unusual shortening of Catherine. Or Cait for Caitlin is also nice.

MissHenty · 04/11/2019 17:23

@wherehavealltheflowersgone sorry that’s me that’s been rude about women like this and I totally understand why you’ve found it rude.

I’m not saying I look at myself and other mums and think these horrible thoughts. I’m just remembering how I regarded mums at the school gates when I was 10 for example. I’d look at them all called Sue and Jane and think they were frumpy and uncool and old (I know I know it’s bad but I was 10!!) and so I am saying a child nowerdays that’s called “Kate” or “sarah” (ie a name which is incredibly rare amongst their peers group but incredibly common amongst their friends’ mums) will be seen as dated (in a bad way) and uncool

Hope that explains it and sorry x

LoveMySituation · 04/11/2019 17:33

I'm a Kate with middle name Jane so according to this thread, I'm boringness personified Grin I like it if only because there's lots of variations (I'm Katherine on birth certificate) Apparently, I was nearly named Angharad..

MissHenty · 04/11/2019 17:36

@LoveMySituation I’ve got a very “boring” top 5 1980s name too. I don’t mind it

I’m glad I wasn’t given a name like Susan for example. A great name but one that would have made me sound 20+ years older than I actually am and one which I associate with all my friends frumpy mums at the school gates (this is me as a 10 year old talking - not me now! I appreciate “frumpy mum” isn’t really acceptable these days - rightly so!)

MissHenty · 04/11/2019 17:46

I don’t think I’ve explained myself well, as I don’t think Kate or Katie was a bad name to have in the 80s. It’s fine. It’s now that I think it’s not a good name. That’s because the name has gone from being completely ubiquitous to practically disappearing. It’s so heavily associated with 30-40 year olds now that I think a little girl with this name would feel a bit uncool

LoveMySituation · 04/11/2019 17:50

I was born in the late '70s. My parents must have set the trend for the 80s Katie's Grin

redexpat · 04/11/2019 18:56

I was doing my family tree the other day and there were Katies being christened in the late 1700s.

user1493494961 · 04/11/2019 19:12

I also think Katherine/Catherine is a classic name. Kate/Katie is much nicer than the Lila/Luna/Willa trend so beloved on here.

Davespecifico · 04/11/2019 19:14

I’m fussy about names but I have. I problem with Katie. I think it’s a lovely sweet name and it doesn’t bother me that it’s not that unusual.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 04/11/2019 19:18

I love Kate/Katie/Katy - also love Sarah - it is a name which needs to come back very soon. And although Susan sounds a bit boring, I like Susie. Suzy and Susannah. Just a few thoughts.

YessicaHaircut · 04/11/2019 19:20

I like it OP, though definitely prefer it spelled Katy. I think it’s quite an unusual name now; I work in a school and we’ve only got one Kate and one Katy among 230ish kids. Compare that to the 80s where my primary school had around 100 kids and I had 2 Katies, a Katy and a Kate just in my class!

Jossina · 04/11/2019 19:29

If it's a nickname for a proper name sure. It gives her a chance to choose something else if she doesn't want to be called Katie. Especially forever.

itsabongthing · 04/11/2019 19:31

Due to being a child of the late 70s/early 80s literally 70% of my friends are called Kate, Katy, Katie, Catherine, Katherine or Kathryn. Oh and one Kitty.

itsabongthing · 04/11/2019 19:32

But that said I do actually like it. Just bear in mind that when your child is in their 30s/40s there will be a lot of old lady katys

youngestisapsycho · 04/11/2019 19:33

My Katy is 17. There was one other Katy in her school year at secondary. If I were naming her now I would go with Kate. I don’t know any younger children called Katy.

TheMistressQuickly · 04/11/2019 19:34

Timeless. X

youngestisapsycho · 04/11/2019 19:35

I really don’t like the ‘ie’ spelling though...

Lironlavie1 · 04/11/2019 19:39

Wow, thank you for all the advice.. I can’t quite believe how some feel so negative about it 😬😱...
so I have a 6 years old daughter called Emily and a 4 years old son called Ben (we quite like solid, classics boring names lol!)
We are expecting a girl, but really stuck with names! I’ve always liked Katie/ Kate, but now I’m not so sure 🧐
The other name on my list are:

Eve
Indie
Ada
Annie
Jessie/ Jess
June

Any advice?
Thanks!!

Emily and Ben are lovely names I think you’ve chosen really well. Names like that are different to names like Kate/Katie and Sarah as they have continued to be used post the 1980s (both are still within the top 50 names) whereas names like Kate and Sarah have all but disappeared so the next generation will see them as “mum” names, in the way we saw Sue/Susan for example

In terms of your list I LOVE Jessica and I love Annie. I would choose Anna and use Annie as a nickname though. I also really like June Ada and Indie. Hard to pick from your list - you’ve got some great choices.

MissHenty · 04/11/2019 20:00

@Lironlavie1 OP if you don’t get many responses to your list, maybe start a new thread x

Jossina · 04/11/2019 20:14

Is he Ben or Benjamin/Benedict?

AppropriateAdult · 04/11/2019 20:15

I have a 6yo Kate, short for Katherine. I’ve always thought of it as classic rather than dated - it’s timeless. I think it would go beautifully with your other children’s names.
