My daughter who is 12 has friends both Kate and Katie. Doesn't seem dated at all to me.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 05/11/2019 16:56

I like Katie

Moomin8 · 05/11/2019 17:03

I know Katie / Katys of all ages and it's a nice name but I felt it didn't stand out enough for me.

campion · 05/11/2019 17:05

I've taught a regular supply of Kate/Katherine/Katie over the years and they're still around.
Ivy/Ada/Elsie will be dated in a few years- much more than Katie ever will be. You do see the trends when you teach and very popular names will suddenly dry up eg Florence,Phoebe.
Katherine and variations have trundled along for centuries.

Cookit · 05/11/2019 17:08

I like it but only as Catherine, Katherine, Katharine etc.
I think it’s a classic name but just a bit out of fashion these days, but that’s fine.

Catherine is kind of an Elizabeth type of name where the child can change the nickname as they grow up. I like the idea of a Catherine nn Kitty personally.

Mrsmadevans · 05/11/2019 17:16

I love it my DD1 is Katherine and she is called Katie, you can have so many differing niknames off it too, Kat, Kathy, Kate, Katie, Katherine, Kath, Kitty, Kit.

Peggywoolley · 05/11/2019 17:17

I have a Catherine, more often Kate. There are two Kates in my daughter’s year. Timeless classic IMO Smile But then I actually wanted something ‘boring’ and not ‘cool old lady’ which feels a bit overdone. My DD loves her name. If I had had another DD I would have gone for Emma - another 70s corker.

MrsFionaCharming · 05/11/2019 17:32

I think Kate and Katie are timeless names, I have 1 of each in my Guide unit.

Personally I also think it’s best to ignore statistics / popularity, she’s going to have this name for 80 or more years, fashion will change many times in her life. Some will say it’s awful having an ‘unfashionable’ name, whilst others will hate having a really popular one with multiple in the class. Go with a name you love, and ignore the trends.

sawyersfishbiscuits · 05/11/2019 17:41

I really like the name Katie. There's all sorts of names I'm coming across lately, from more modern names like Hunter, middle of the road names like Lily or Emily to old style names like Ada or Sid.

In all honesty I don't think it matters if the name is a bit 80s if it's a name you like. DD has a Stuart in her class and that's really not a big deal.

Katie is sweet and pretty and I've never met a Katie I didn't like. Go for it OP 😊

Moomin8 · 05/11/2019 20:18

Well Emma was very popular in the 80s but it's making a big comeback.

Leopardprintboots · 05/11/2019 20:27

@Moomin8 Emma’s been on a downward trajectory since the early 90s! See graph using ONS data:

names.darkgreener.com/#emma

Emma is still within the top 60 names though in 2018.

Unlike Katie that’s about to leave the top 200 names, and unlike Kate that’s dropped off the planet at number 596!

ISawyouinTescoyesterday · 05/11/2019 20:30

I am laughing at the frumpy Aunty thing. Wink
However, Katie May be a classic name but surely better then some made up names these days!!

17caterpillars1mouse · 05/11/2019 20:41

I dont think it's as uncommon as you think these days. I know 2 Katie's under 5 and a few young Katherine's too

OMGicantbelieveeit · 05/11/2019 20:48

I know a 14yo Kate and a few Katies who are around the 19/20 mark but the vast majority of Katies I know are aged between 25 and 45 so I have to agree with others that to young ears it is bound to sound dated

Having a name that is ahead of the trend (e.g. Olivias & Sams in their mid 40s now) is cool but having a name that is 20 years behind the trend is not quite so cool!

I've nothing against the name but it's really had its day now. If you really must insist then imho Kate sounds more sophisticated and cool than Katie

Peggywoolley · 05/11/2019 20:48

The number of babies born in 2018 as either Katherine, Catherine, Kate or Katie is 567. If they were all nicknamed Katie it would jointly rank 93. Just saying Wink

Leopardprintboots · 05/11/2019 20:55

@Peggywoolley interesting but it wouldn’t rank at 93 as all the other names would shift about too as you’d have to apply that criteria across the board. You can’t just combine one name and not combine any others ! You’d then combine all the Evie Eve and Evelyns for example. You’d get a totally different chart!

Leopardprintboots · 05/11/2019 21:00

Isabella + Isabelle?
Sophie + Sophia?
Annabelle + Belle?
Elle + Eleanor + Ellie (+ Ella?)?

What about all the names that you could nickname Belle? That’d be HUGE!

The whole chart would look unrecognisable

Love chatting names 😃

Tutlefru · 05/11/2019 21:07

Do it OP.

I might be bias as my name is Katie

Peggywoolley · 05/11/2019 21:16

Fair point @leopard Smile

I guess my point was that because Kate and Katie are actual names as well as commonly used nicknames the stats for the name(s) can be misleading.

I admit they are not massively popular at present tho Grin

Leopardprintboots · 05/11/2019 21:26

@Peggywoolley yes i see what you mean. I actually think Catherine or Katherine would be a much safer choice than Katie as then the nickname Kathy would be a possibility too and there’d be far less ‘old uncool mums/aunties’ called Kathy than Katie/Kate

Peggywoolley · 05/11/2019 21:41

Love the nn Kathy! It’s sweet. Even if it does make me think of Kaffy from Eastenders Smile

AnneElliott · 05/11/2019 21:59

I think Katie is a bit childish for an adult. Why not use Katherine and use Katie while she's young as a nickname?

Moomin8 · 06/11/2019 14:58

@Leopardprintboots yeah I think Emma is really popular in the US at the moment. It's back in the top 100 in the U.K. in part (I think) due to the cute US toddlers Mila and Emma on YouTube.

Leopardprintboots · 06/11/2019 15:03

Emma’s never left the top 100 for the past 20 years and probably longer than that. The data I’m using only goes back 20 years
