Ruby Allen

I'm due next week with our baby girl and for me, Ruby is the front runner (it's DH's second choice but he could be persuaded). My issue our surname being Allen and the character Ruby Allen in Eastenders - I don't watch it but it was pointed out to me by someone else.

How much of a big deal do you think this is? Will people constantly think of it/make reference to it? Or does no one watch it anymore? I love the name and wouldn't have known about the character if someone hadn't pointed it out, but equally I don't want people to constantly make comments.

I don't want feedback on the name Ruby itself, just her having the same name as a character in a soap opera.

Thanks in advance

It wouldn't bother me and to be honest it's not like the character in EastEnders is likely to be one of those long-term always associated with the show characters.
Ruby Allen isn't the next Pauline Fowler- I don't thinkGrin
Ruby Allen is a lovely name.

It was my first thought on reading the thread title but I don't think it is a reason not to use it at all. I agree that it is unlikely to be a name that is permanently linked to the show like Ian Beale or Kat Slater.

Hi OP,
I think you should decide which would upset you more. Not using the name, or comments on Eastenders. One of my brothers is in a similar situation and it did annoy my mum as she didn't watch the soap and didn't know about the soap connection. She would have still chosen his name and he likes his name.

ojo821 · 03/11/2019 10:38

Personally I’d still use the name if you really like it. Not everyone is likely to make the connection, especially when she’s older. I’ve never heard of the character but I’m not sure if I’m in the minority.

MissHenty · 03/11/2019 11:27

It wouldn’t bother me. The character could leave the Tv show next week and you’d be so annoyed if you’d used that as a reason not to use the name

I've no idea who this Ruby Allen character is. I don't watch eastenders. I only know 1 person who does. Use the name. It's lovely!

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 03/11/2019 17:11

Didn't you have a thread about this before?
I don't watch eastenders but I know the character, I don't know if that would bother me so much but it's not a name I'm keen on, what we're your other choices, I can't remember???

OhMarnie · 03/11/2019 18:09

@Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav yeah I had a thread before about Ruby vs Emilia. Still in the same predicament really but no one said much about their views on the eastenders thing so wanted some thoughts on that to see if it swayed me one way or the other!

It’s lovely. I love Ruby! The eastenders character is quite minor- she’s not exactly Peggy Mitchell or Bianca Butcher!

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 03/11/2019 19:44

Yes Emilia!! Now I remember, wasn't there another name beginning with R (robin/yn????) as a middle name you were considering? personally I still vote Emilia but good luck and congratulations on whatever you choose, it will be perfect.

OhMarnie · 04/11/2019 17:06

@Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav yes that's right it was either Ruby Emilia Robyn Allen or Emilia Robyn Allen 😊 thank you! Naming a baby is such a responsibility isn't it! 🙈

I know, I've got 3, I'm not having anymore but still love hearing names and thinking what I'd call another one!! 😂 I remember the stress though 😂
Still love Emilia Robyn Allen 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️

I called my DD Ruby in 2005 because I heard it in eastenders Haha.

DramaAlpaca · 04/11/2019 23:54

I've never heard of the soap character so all I'd think was that Ruby is a nice name & goes well with your surname.
