Gabriel or Theodore

Thought we had decided but wavering again. Love Theodore/Theo/Ted but concerned about popularity. Not mega keen on nicknames for Gabriel (Gabe) though. Baby could come anytime so we need to decide soon. Big brother is James.

So which do you prefer:

Gabriel William Hogan
Theodore William Hogan

I love Theodore, but I have one, so am biased Grin

AppleKatie · 26/10/2019 10:20

Theodore goes better with James imo

aibutohavethisusername · 26/10/2019 10:35

Gabriel

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/10/2019 10:47

Both lovely names. My boy (if i have one will be Gabriel Patrick) Probably Gabe mostly as I’m too lazy to say the full name. My dd is Molly but she’s always just been Moll
However if you don’t like Gabe you’re best off with Theo.
If you’re concerned about popularity Gabriel is more common than Theo IME I’m hearing lots of little Gabriels being shouted in the supermarket. However I’ve heard nor comearcoss any little Theo’s

Stephminx · 26/10/2019 10:51

@awwlookatmybabyspider

I love Gabriel Patrick - was my boy names but I have two girls.

Koloh · 26/10/2019 10:59

Someone posted the list actually. There were 1932 Theodores born last year (#29) and 1022 Gabriels (#61). If you include Theos and Gabes it's 1028 Gabriels/Gabes and 4673 Theodore/Theos ONS

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/10/2019 11:07

Patrick is after my lovely mum who’s no longer with us. My nephew has my dads name as middle name so it’ll be nice to honour my mum. Smile

MikeUniformMike · 26/10/2019 11:41

Theodore is awful

missyB1 · 26/10/2019 11:43

I know too many Theodores and I must admit I’ve got right off it as a result. I love Gabriel though! I have a Patrick which is also lovely 😊

Peachbubble · 26/10/2019 13:03

Theodore, don't like Gabriel at all

MissHenty · 26/10/2019 13:03

I really love the sound of the name Theo/Theodore - it is popular but there’s a reason for that

Although there’s actually not one Theo at my children’s nursery and none in the baby group. I suppose it’s still a relatively small percentage of babies that are actually given the name. It’s not like John 40 years ago where 1 in 4 boys were called John or something silly like thag

Gabriel /Gabe is lovely too though I think

Naomimi · 26/10/2019 19:46

Theodore/Theo/Teddy is definitely more popular but it’s lovely.

Gabriel is also gorgeous but like you I’m not keen on Gabe at all.

Gabe does seem quite likely to happen so if you’re dead against it, I’d go with Theodore. I would only use Gabriel in the middle spot for this reason.

DramaAlpaca · 26/10/2019 22:45

Gabriel. I don't like Theo(dore) at all.

Tillygetsit · 26/10/2019 23:29

I much prefer Gabriel and would have it in my list if dh liked it. Theodore will always be an over stuffed teddy in a waistcoat to me!

MrsNoMopp · 26/10/2019 23:40

Theodore

Astronica · 27/10/2019 10:08

I much prefer Theodore/Ted. Great name! I don't like either Gabriel or Gabe.

Eleanorbellanor · 27/10/2019 18:20

Definitely Theodore

NoSauce · 27/10/2019 19:46

I find Theodore and Theo a bit boring. Gabriel is so much nicer imo.

VenusClapTrap · 27/10/2019 20:59

Gabriel

CharitySchmarity · 04/11/2019 15:40

I like both but I think I slightly prefer Gabriel, and it is less used too.

Leopardprintboots · 04/11/2019 15:49

@babynoname2019 I assume baby has been born now, what did you decide?

MissHenty · 04/11/2019 18:02

Yes let us know OP @babynoname2019

babynoname2019 · 04/11/2019 20:29

Still pregnant and not so patiently waiting for something to happen! Think we are leaning towards Theodore but will wait to meet them to decide for definite I think. (We don't know the gender either and are definitely set on a girl's name). Will update you when there is something to tell!

I think they are both beautiful names so go with your heart, and maybe what feels right when you meet him (if it is indeed a boy!).

The Gabriel I know has never had anyone shorten his name so it's not a given that they have to become a Gabe.

Also a consideration on Theodore... if you live in pet of the country where people have lazy pronunciation of 'th', how much would that bother you? I say that as a friend's child was forever being referred to as Feo....

Good luck with everything and do let us all know what you decide on!

Lironlavie1 · 04/11/2019 21:26

Theo! 🥰😍
