I don’t the last posters are right.
Look at Penelope (Pen-ell-o-pee) but the nn is still Penny. Even though there’s no ee sound after the Pen part.

MrsJoshNavidi · 26/10/2019 11:16

@Gentleness Em to rhyme with femme

"Femme" is pronounced "fam". It's French. Grin

6grandc · 26/10/2019 11:19

Kids tend to make up their own minds how to spell their own diminutive even if the parents have started off with say Ollie they may choose to be Oli. Emmeline is pretty but for all you know now she may get called Lina!

DippyAvocado · 26/10/2019 11:20

That's kind of my point though. You have to add the y to get the ee sound for Penny. You wouldn't write Pene and expect people to say Penn-ee.

If the first name is Emmeline it is pronounced Emma-leen. If you just take off the "line" you are left with Emme, pronounced Emma. If you want "Em-mee" you have to add the ee sound with a y or ie, Emmy or Emmie.

Ontopofthesunset · 26/10/2019 11:21

I think if you want Emmy you need to spell it Emmy or Emmie. I would assume Emme was a Germanic name, like Femke or Lotte, so would pronounce it Em-uh (like Emma in English with an unstressed last vowel sound). As previous posters have said, it's not pronounced Emmy-leen anyway, but Em-uh-leen, so that would support the pronunciation - as if you wanted to call her the first part of her name, Emm-uh.

Jue01 · 26/10/2019 12:30

Emm(e)

Gentleness · 26/10/2019 12:35

@MrsJoshNavidi - true! I was thinking entirely of the m... Need more coffee Grin

I doubt it somewhat in this case. OP plans to raise her daughter using the nickname as her everyday name, if I'm reading her post correctly. So her name if displayed in her nursery etc would be the nickname rather than the full one, and she'll be taught how to spell it as if it were her full name, it'll be called out in registers etc.

If the girl shortens it, it'll probably be shortening Emme, rather than Emmeline, which I imagine would be Em or Ems, but she'd still be likely to spell Emme as taught.

MangoSpice · 26/10/2019 12:56

I teach an Emme. Pronounced Emay.

undeadmedicstudentmum · 26/10/2019 13:56

Emmi

It's a lovely name...my dog is called EmmiSmile

honeybunlatte · 26/10/2019 14:39

Emme = Em
Emmé = Emmie sort of. Probably more Emay

Just spell it Emmie. No confusion then.

FizzyGreenWater · 26/10/2019 14:51

Oh right. Well, she'll eventually decide on her nn and how she spells it, it's not like deciding the birth certificate. But as you can see here, your DH is wrong: in English, that's not a good option if your intention is to spell out 'Emm-ee'. 99% of people would go for Emmy or Emmie, I'd go for Emmie short for Emmeline because the i is also in the full name.

I would have thought that an Emme was 'Em', and would expect a German or French longer name in there somewhere!

DramaAlpaca · 26/10/2019 14:52

Emmy

Verily1 · 26/10/2019 14:54

I think it could be

Em eee

Or

Em ay

MillicentMartha · 26/10/2019 15:11

Yes, go for Emmie or Emmy. Emme is either Em or Em uh.

WitchibanLipstickForMen · 26/10/2019 16:05

Like the letter M

Idea86 · 26/10/2019 16:31

Depends. It should be Emme, like Anne. It then becomes Emmie with an IE like Annie.

Becbobs · 26/10/2019 17:01

My 15 month old daughter is Emmeline, with the nickname Em-me. We spell it Emmy.

mininionsteve · 26/10/2019 17:04

Emmi is a Finnish girls name.

PlasticPatty · 26/10/2019 17:07

Emme would be pronounced Emma.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 26/10/2019 18:02

Emmy to rhyme with Jimmy.

BackOnceAgainWithABurnerEmail · 26/10/2019 18:05

Emmy is such a prettier name! And then you can buy her emmy the great albums!

Mamabear88 · 26/10/2019 18:42

Em-ee for sure

ragged · 26/10/2019 18:52

I thought it would be like Emma in English, the second e like a German e I guess. Which is a lot better than EM-meh which is my 2nd guess. The "Emmie" I know spells it like that or Emmy or Emmee.

Mamagunner · 26/10/2019 22:44

I'd have read it as Em-me.
