It depends what or is a nickname from.

I would have said Em-ee, but if it is shortened from say Emmeline then I would say it Em or Emma depending on how you pronounce the full name.

TheVanguardSix · 26/10/2019 09:14

Em-eh

TheCanterburyWhales · 26/10/2019 09:15

Em.
So that's how I would spell it

If you want Emmy then you need Emmy, or Emmie.
People will also read it as Emma with a typo.

MrsDimmond · 26/10/2019 09:16

If its a nick name (i.e. a created name) why would anyone choosee a spelling that is unclear?

Those letters : emme in english would surely be pronounced em. But if I was told parents had nucknamed their child "Emme" I would have to ask how it was pronounced (and why they'd done it ...)

hellotabitha · 26/10/2019 09:25

Em

MikeUniformMike · 26/10/2019 09:35

Em-ee, according to › pronounce › emme
I'd have said Em.

Emmie/Emmy is a name in its own right these days

I guess Emme sounds like that

flowery · 26/10/2019 09:39

Surely nicknames evolve verbally first, so it’s a question of deciding how to spell whatever the nickname is after you find yourself using it? So if child’s name is Emily and you’ve started calling her Em as a nickname and now need to write it down, why would you add an extraneous ‘me’ at the end when writing it down?

DippyAvocado · 26/10/2019 09:41

Isn't it the German version of Emma? I would say Emma. I would assume of it was to be pronounced "Em-mee" it would be spelled Emmie or Emmy.

AfterSchoolWorry · 26/10/2019 09:42

M

LunaAzul · 26/10/2019 09:44

Same name as Jennifer Lopez' daughter ask her Wink

I would pronounce it Em - ee

namechangenumber2 · 26/10/2019 09:45

I'd say Em

Em-ee would be spelt Emmie or Emmy I think

RolytheRhino · 26/10/2019 09:45

I'd guess Emma but with an e sound, not an a. So, like someone with a strong regional accent was saying Emma.
'Em-meh, get yer backside dahn 'ere!'

bridgetreilly · 26/10/2019 10:06

I would assume short for Emmeline and therefore Emme.

Does it really matter how a nickname is spelled, though?

neverknowingwhy · 26/10/2019 10:07

Thanks for all the replies!
The nickname is Em-me which I think should be spelt Emmy or Emmie. DP wants to spell it Emme which I think would just get confused with Em all the time (like Anne is An not Annee).
We agreed to throw it out to MN Grin

Looks like a lot of people would say Em-me but still room for confusion so Emmy might be better. Short for Emmeline :-)

I think it does- I only go by my nickname so my nickname is essentially my name which I only spell one specific way

Emme = Em-eh

Emmy or Emmie = Em-ee

JellyfishAndShells · 26/10/2019 10:11

Em -eh

FriedasCarLoad · 26/10/2019 10:11

Oh Emmeline is a beautiful name.

I see your husband’s logic, but think that Emmie is clearer than Emme.

Ziraphale · 26/10/2019 10:26

Emme = Em-uh / Em-eh, depending on accent.

chillipopcorn1 · 26/10/2019 10:36

My daughter is Emme (short for Emmeline) pronounces Em-mee. I liked the idea of just using the letters from her full name, rather than changing the letter IYSWIM. Lots of people spell it Emmy which I don't really mind - it will be more up to her when she's older. Reading all these responses has made me wonder if people think it's really weird though!

queenofmycastlex · 26/10/2019 10:36

Emmy

DippyAvocado · 26/10/2019 11:06

Thing is, the Emme part of Emmeline is actually pronounced "Emma" do if you definitely want "Emm-ee", I would use a different spelling

flowery · 26/10/2019 11:07
