Just curious. How would you pronounce Elle?

I thought Elle was pn like Elle Macpherson. Elle.

However apparently some people pn it Ellie, to ryhme with Nellie, but still spell it Elle.

How do you pn it? Elle or Ellie.

Elle and Ellie are different names! If there is no i then it is Elle pronounced as you said.

HattieGoesToTown · 25/10/2019 14:07

That's what I thought, but I know someone who has called their LG Elle, but said they are pn it Ellie.

It just makes me think of this

MissHenty · 25/10/2019 14:38

Elle is a lovely name

Yes as in the supermodel

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/10/2019 14:43

Elle as in supermodel.
Ellie is the spelling of Ellie

HattieGoesToTown · 25/10/2019 16:01

I also think Elle is a lovely name. They are definitely pn it Ellie though.

I’d pronounce it “El”.

Ellie is a completely different name.

She’s probably going to end up with her name constantly being both spelt & pronounced incorrectly correctly

HattieGoesToTown · 25/10/2019 16:50

I know. I imagine it will be very frustrating.

pn it elle, my names ellie and and i’ve had people spell it elle

bridgetreilly · 25/10/2019 19:01

I would absolutely pronounce it with one syllable: Elle, like the letter l.

BUT there is an American craft company calle Elle Designs and that is always pronounced Ellay, as though there were an accent on the second e, but there isn't.

I've never heard anyone pronounce it Ellie. That's ridiculous.

Marcipex · 25/10/2019 20:05

Elle, I would assume one syllable.

diddlediddle · 25/10/2019 21:51

God I hate people who can't spell and then inflict it on their kids.

I knew a Cassie once who's parents insisted it was pronounced Casey (Kay-See). No, you've put a double s in there, it's pronounced to rhyme with Lassie.

Clearly Elle is not pronounced Ellie!

DappledThings · 25/10/2019 22:08

They are ridiculous.

Janedownourlane · 25/10/2019 23:27

I know an Elle but she often has it pronounced 'Ellie'. I think some people think they have to say the last 'e'.

HattieGoesToTown · 26/10/2019 09:13

They're actually really nice people, but the way they are pn is really silly, because as a pp pointed out, little Elle is in for a lifetime of mispelling and mispronouncing.

@diddlediddle Funnily enough, I knew a Casey who insisted it was pronounced Cassie! Grin

Inlovewitharagorn · 26/10/2019 09:29

I know an Elle pronounced Ellie.
But it's not right.

diddlediddle · 26/10/2019 09:35

@sweetsaltypopcorn AAARGH!

Maybe I will call my child Anna and insist it is pronounced Clementine

CornishCreation · 26/10/2019 10:57

I have a friend in her 30s called Elaine and she's always been Elle for short as in Elle McPherson, I like it!

Lavenderblues · 27/10/2019 07:32

Depends on the language:

In French Elle is a pronoun pronounced El.

In German Elle is a unit of measurement pronounced El-leh (the leh is a short eh sound)

In English it doesn't exist as a word or name, so open to interpretation!

Butterfly005 · 27/10/2019 08:52

I love the name Elle! Would pronounce it "El" definitely.
