Stuck on middle name

LauraHN95 · 17/10/2019 03:17

It's sort of a tradition in my family to use your Grandparents name as the middle name. I'm 100% set on the first name Rose but I'm really struggling with the middle as I don't like either of mine or my DH grandma's name. Which do you think sounds best??

Rose Ivy
Rose Doreen
Rose Joyce

Thanks for any input! Smile

Don't like any of them -sorry!

LauraHN95 · 17/10/2019 03:24

@pollywobble None isn't an option I have though, it is a family tradition i would like to follow and I don't have anymore Grans haha

None are great but I would choose Rose Ivy as the best. It actually sounds very sweet even though a little strong on the florals!

Is a variation on one of the names a possibility? - ie Dorothea or Doria instead of Doreen. Or Ivette instead of Ivy? Or could you use one of their middles names?

LauraHN95 · 17/10/2019 03:35

I know the floral themes are strong! Doreen is a type of rose too.. I don't like the variations because it's not their name. The only other option I have is my Auntie who passed which is Karen but again I'm not a fan of this name either, although I like Karen Rose just not vice versa

Of the three then OP it would be Ivy but Rose Ivy doesn't scan well.Do you like Rosanna??
Is there a way to adapt one of their surnames, instead?

SleepWarrior · 17/10/2019 04:55

Quite like Rose Joyce or Rose Ivy. Less keen on Doreen though I'm afraid.

custardbear · 17/10/2019 05:51

Rose Joyce sounds too much like Rolls Royce

Ivy doesn't sound good

Doreen - just no

What's the fourth grandmothers name?

Personally I'd throw tradition to the wind! Or pick a nice surname if there is one in the family, or pick a nice name of a great grandmother

071019DD · 17/10/2019 05:55

Rose Joyce or Rose Ivy I think are really nice. If we have a DD (hopefully later today/tomorrow, off to be induced later this morning!) we'll have a "XXX Joyce" OHs grandmothers name. It's not 100% what I'd pick but i like that it has meaning! Good luck OP.

Emelene · 17/10/2019 05:56

Maybe go for 2 middle names if you need your granny's names?

Rose Elizabeth Joyce
Rose Amelia Ivy
Rose Emily Doreen

Etc.
I agree that maybe on their own they don't flow that well.

userabcname · 17/10/2019 05:57

I'd go Rose Ivy. Have a similar issue here (or at least would have if DS2 had been a girl - luckily the grandads have nice names!) so can sympathise!

HalfBloodPrincess · 17/10/2019 05:59

Could you use Joy instead of Joyce?

Rosie Joy is lovely.

TheVoiceInTheShed · 17/10/2019 06:04

Rose Ivy is lovely!
Doesn't matter if it is on the flower theme unless you are hyphenating it and introducing her as Rose Ivy every time.
Middle names don't come up in to conversation often and if yours dies it has a reason behind it.
Rose is a beautiful name btw and very strong when used as a first.

TheVoiceInTheShed · 17/10/2019 06:05

*does obviously!

PandasMum · 17/10/2019 06:59

Ivy is beautiful but it’s extremely floral

What are your grandmothers’ middle names?

From your current options I’d probably mix it up slightly & go Rose Joy

MissHenty · 17/10/2019 07:32

Gosh @071019DD I keep spotting your name and wondering if you’ve had your baby yet ! Will you come back and let us know if you have girl or boy and what you call them

I don’t mind any of your middle names @LauraHN95 - to me middle names aren’t that important as don’t get used often at all. If you really don’t like could you give her two middle names? Pick one you do like plus add a family name?

Love the name Rose btw

LauraHN95 · 17/10/2019 11:57

@custardbear My other grans name has already been used by my sister.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I know the names aren’t the best options but it’s the only options I have unfortunately. I won’t be adapting or changing any of the names slightly as the whole point is to have it as the grandmas name but I appreciate the feedback! Smile

Rose Ivy sounds the best to my ears - and in all honesty, how often will you use her full name? Mine only gets her full name if she's being naughty!

inwood · 17/10/2019 13:04

Rosie sounds better with all of them rather than Rose but realistically you never hear them all together so go with the one you like most!

LauraHN95 · 17/10/2019 13:09

@inwood Unfortunately I’m completely dead set on Rose. I’ve always hated my middle name because it’s so old (it’s Hilda) so I guess I’m just anxious about how they’ll feel about having a middle name that’s so old sounding as well. But thank you, you’re right about rarely using full name Smile

OP posts:
user1471462209 · 17/10/2019 13:43

Ivy is a bit trendy at the moment so I don't think the kid will think it's that 'old'.

pinkyredrose · 17/10/2019 13:47

Rose Ivy is best. Do you want her to have a middle name though? Just wondering why tradition is so important, will older family members be upset if she doesn't have one?

Boireannachlaidir · 17/10/2019 14:00

Rose Doreen will be more unusual than Ivy and I reckon even names like Doreen (and Hilda) will make a comeback.

Not keen on Joyce and Ivy is (literally) everywhere Smile

LauraHN95 · 17/10/2019 14:02

@pinkyredrose I don’t really think they would be upset but I’ve always had the mindset that I would like to give my child their middle name. I’m very close to both my grans.

The only other option I would consider is the middle name being Karen after my late auntie who was essentially a mum to me.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 17/10/2019 14:08

Ivy is by far the best out of a bad bunch. Not that any of them are particularly bad names. They just go flow at all with Rose. Mind you not many names do go as a middle name for Rose as it’s one of those names that will mostly sound better as a middle name.
Rose Marie
Rose Mary
Rose Ellen
Rose Anne
Are all nice. Do you like any idea f those

Twooter · 17/10/2019 14:09

Rose ivy unless surname begins with a P
