Arthur or Archie

We are currently deciding between Archie and Arthur.

Archie is DH’s choice - I like it, but not as keen as it feels too “nicknamy” (I’m in the mumsnet camp of full name on the BC, but hate Archibald!). Also less keen due to royal baby being named recently.

I like Arthur as it’s classic/traditional. Both names are higher up in top 100 than I wanted, but I’m letting that go.

We aren’t finding out the sex which I feel makes it much harder this time! We already have a Harry (so would it be weird to have an Archie? As obvs a William would be a no!)

Comments and other suggestions welcome (ages ago we also liked Luca but have no Italian links?)

Arthur with Artie as a NN

MissHenty · 13/10/2019 13:40

Yes do you like the nickname Artie @SaltedCaramelEverything ? I LOVE it

ilovetofu · 13/10/2019 13:42

I prefer Archie

Rachelover60 · 13/10/2019 13:55

Arthur is best I think and he can be called 'Art' which sounds really cool.

Like you, I prefer full names which can be shortened to a nickname but don't care for Archibald - so would never call a child Archie.

Lavenderblues · 13/10/2019 14:12

Arthur is just as long/easy to say as Archie. To me they're completely different names!

Clownfish123 · 13/10/2019 18:56

I prefer Archie, I've always had a soft spot for it. I think it's fine on a 40 year old.
Arthur always feels quite serious and old fashioned to me. I still don't know any little Arthur's, maybe that's why.

daniellelaurak · 13/10/2019 20:01

Arthur is miles better. I'd go Arthur with NN Artie. I'd rule archie out if you already have a Harry.

I like Arthur. Kates sister baby is called Arthur so still kind of royal but the names go together.

hoverboardforchristmas · 13/10/2019 20:37

I like Arthur much more that Archie

Hey1256 · 13/10/2019 20:52

I don't like either equally sorry. Arthur I just don't understand how and why is becoming popular again it sounds like an 80 yeAr old man

Grumpymcgrumperson · 14/10/2019 08:13

Love Arthur! Archie is awful imo

Lavenderblues · 14/10/2019 08:15

Neither

But Arthur if I had to choose. Don't like Archibald or Archie.

JinCa · 14/10/2019 09:26

Another vote for Archer here, with Archie as a nickname! But I love Arthur too - possibly prefer this when paired with Harry. x

subwaysaladfan · 14/10/2019 09:51

Arthur

123Dancewithme · 14/10/2019 10:39

Arthur

MissisBee · 14/10/2019 10:50

I have an Arthur, so obviously biased! He occasionally gets called Archie by people we've maybe met once and have remembered his name wrong. I think it goes nicely with Harry.

PrestonNotHeston · 14/10/2019 10:55

Arthur, by a long way. I've always liked the associations with King Arthur and Camelot.

Spiderpants · 14/10/2019 10:55

I have an Archer, nn Archie and always get lovely comments about his name, we liked archie but also had the same thing of cute on a 5 year old not so cute on a 50 year old, so if he want he has Archer to go for that, its unusual but not out there.

PandasMum · 14/10/2019 13:23

Archie is a McKenzie type name to my ears
Arthur is more Edward
So it depends what sort of names you’re drawn to.
Although I do know someone who has an Arthur who goes by Archie.
I also know an adorable Asher which I love.
Luca is lovely and I don’t think you need Italian links.

Geneva1995 · 17/10/2019 20:33

What about Archer OP?

december20100 · 18/10/2019 13:14

I prefer Arthur I think.

LionKingLover · 18/10/2019 19:43

Sorry for late reply. He gets called archer all the time, not archie. Although as another poster put he could be called that as a nickname if you wanted. Lots of lovely comments on his name, it's different and there's not many, but not weird and out there either. X

BalloonDinosaur · 18/10/2019 20:31

I prefer Arthur, though I like Archer too. I reckon he would end up as Archie though.

We have a Lucas that would've been Luca but I had the same concerns as you OP. DP and I are both from Yorkshire and weren't sure we could pull it off!
