I love the name Alistair but can’t use it as it’s my nephew.

What I love about the name is that it’s a classic normal name but it has actually never been popular. I also love the nickname Ali.

From what I can see the name has never actually been in the Uk top 100 names (why not!! I can’t understand it) and the name is now close to number 500 in the name charts. Is there another equivalent name? All I can think of is Laurence. But I don’t like that as much. Anything else?

Names like Christopher aren’t the same as they were very popular in the 1980s

@TeacupDrama yes you’ve summarised perfectly

John is a good suggestion but John has been extremely popular a few decades ago. I’m thinking of a classic name that’s never really been that popular (like Alistair and Laurence)

Robert, Gregory or Jonathan?

mistermagpie · 03/10/2019 22:26

I actually know six Alistair's (admittedly not all spelled like that) all in their 30s, so it must have been popular once!

Anyway, similar names, I think Cameron is a good shout as is Fraser and Duncan but if you're not bothered about Scottishness then the classics like Michael, Matthew, Daniel, Benjamin, Peter etc might be worth considering. All were popular at one point but I have not met a baby with those names in the last five years.

Lots of classic but relatively unusual ideas to think about.

Rachelover60 · 04/10/2019 14:07

Alistair is a nice name, my son went to school with a couple, they each had a Scottish parent. Cameron is very good too if you like names that are popular in Scotland but less so here. There's also Alexander which is timeless.

FindaPenny · 04/10/2019 14:21

The first name I thought of was Lawrence too!
Russell
Ross
Nicholas
Maybe if you find famous Alistairs and Lawrence's you can see what other names were popular during that era?
The only Alistair I can think of is Alistair Crowley and I think he was some sort of Satanist🤣

FindaPenny · 04/10/2019 14:24

Actually the satanist is spelt differently... What about Samuel?

MissHenty · 04/10/2019 16:49

Thank you for all these suggestions, I’m still going though them but you’ve all done brilliantly to understand the ‘brief’.

@Dollywilde lovely list of names. I’ve always liked the sound of Felix because of the X at the end. When is baby due? Is it definitely a boy?
