Really sorry for posting so many threads but this naming malarkey is hard work & I love the brutal honesty I can get here ! Grin

Please let me know what you think of these for a boy. We’d also like a name that doesn’t scream a particular class (any) - are we achieving that?

Rowan
Arthur
Robin
Peter

@OldSpeclkledHen I’ve seen worse names suggested on here Grin

Peter is my favourite. Ageless, classless. Can’t make any assumptions about a Peter.Kind of like James, but currently far less widely used.

Whoops75 · 10/09/2019 09:14

Arthur or Robin

Also like Nicholas which is similar to your names.

Rachelover60 · 10/09/2019 09:16

I also thought you were considering calling your child, "Sorry" :-). Glad you're not!

All very good names.

Frangible · 10/09/2019 09:27

I prefer Rowan out of your list -- which I don't see as at all feminine, just a nature name. Peter for me will be forever the annoying mini-git, dressed like Prince George on an official outing, of the Peter and Jane Ladybird books. I have no strong feelings about Arthur, but Robin evokes Christopher Robin and the 'constant weader fwowing up' (Dorothy Parker).

Frangible · 10/09/2019 09:28

And yes, I did think you might be considering 'Sorry' as a name. Didn't Tess of the D'Urbervilles call her short-lived baby 'Sorrow'?

bridgetreilly · 10/09/2019 09:29

Robin or Rowan would be my choices, with Peter a close third. Arthur is okay but very popular right now and I think it will date quite badly.

inwood · 10/09/2019 09:29

I know two Romans and they're female, so I would automatically assume female, although no reason not to be male.

Way better than Sorry 😂😂

ButterflyOfFreedom · 10/09/2019 09:31

I like Rowan best.
There seem to be a lot of Arthur's around.
Really don't like Robin for a boy (but love Robyn for a girl!).
Peter is ok, bit old fashioned maybe.

Chitarra · 10/09/2019 09:34

I like them all, favourite to least favourite in this order:
Rowan
Robin
Arthur
Peter

ThirstyGhost · 10/09/2019 09:42

Rowan. They're all nice though IMO.

MissHenty · 10/09/2019 10:03

@inwood do you mean that you know two girls called “RoWan” or “RoMan”? You’ve written RoMan in your post.

This is exactly the issue I was talking about @AverageMummy - the RoMan/Rowan confusion. A very recent phenomenon because both names dramatically rising x

AverageMummy · 10/09/2019 10:32

@MissHenty Roman is a word whereas Rowan isn’t so my phone did that autocorrect a few times until it got used to it. I’d be very surprised at women called Roman! Grin

MissHenty

Ella and Emma have one letter different. they are still totally different names that do not get mixed up.

Don't get the 'problem' with Rowan and Roman, tbh.

Shadow1234 · 10/09/2019 11:02

Prefer Rowan and Robyn for a girl
Peter is a.bit dull

MissHenty · 10/09/2019 11:41

@CassianAndor they are two letters different but yes I see you point

I think it’s the similarity between the two names that means Ella as a name has risen dramatically over the past 20 years (gone from 56th to 9th) whereas over the same time period Emma has done the exact opposite and dropped outside of the top 50 for the first time in forever (gone from 14th to 56th). Almost mirroring each other but opposite ways round. Ella is basically replacing Emma.

Just my opinion though of course xx

joystir59 · 10/09/2019 11:43

Great names. Least favourite- Rowan as it's a bit posh

TommyShelby · 10/09/2019 11:47

Arthur or Rowan

Sophronia · 10/09/2019 12:03

Peter or Robin

WeakandWobbly · 10/09/2019 12:05

Peter- lovely name.

inwood · 10/09/2019 16:32

@MissHenty bloody spellcheck!

AverageMummy · 10/09/2019 18:23

@MissHenty I really think when you get fixated on things like this it means you really just don’t love the name & want to give yourself a rational reason to discount it. I went with a name in a sort of similar situation to you - seeing something negative that everyone else said wasn’t a big deal. It made me miserable & I ended up changing her name at 3 months.

mumof2xo · 10/09/2019 18:27

Robin makes my skin crawl.
If I were a grown man, I’m not sure I’d want my name to be that of a sweet, delicate teeny tiny bird.

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 10/09/2019 18:56

One of my husbands friends is called Robin, he is definitely not feminine or wet, however he's always called Rob so it was a couple of years before I knew his actual name!! 😂 😂
Rowan, the two I know are female
I think Arthur is cute, popular at the moment and what would it be shortened to, art, artie?
Peter, solid, traditional, not many round these days, probably my favourite with arthur

DramaAlpaca · 10/09/2019 21:09

I don't like Rowan or Robin.

Arthur's nice but popular. Peter is lovely & due a revival.
