I see this name mentioned here a lot in suggestions but how would it be pronounced in The Uk? Our family is mixed Greek and British so I know how it's pronounced in Greek but am interested how it would be said in places like school amongst English speakers etc.

We are struggling for baby girl names that work in both English and Greek so any suggestions would be most welcome! Big brother is Theodore. Thanks!

I pronounce it Cal - eye - o - pee. Friend had this name and pronounced it like that

SavagelyGardening · 07/09/2019 19:11

Cal-EYE-o-pee

mynameisMrG · 07/09/2019 19:11

As above. Heard it first on greys anatomy and that’s how she pronounced it

Grasspigeons · 07/09/2019 19:11

Cal eye o pee

MustardScreams · 07/09/2019 19:11

What they said. I really love it, but I am a big Greys Anatomy fan!

ilovethatshow · 07/09/2019 19:37

Thanks for the replies! Are we saying Oh as in Oh my God or O as in Ch-O-colate. Guess I need to go and watch Grays!

Another Grey's Anatomy fan here - what they all said. Lovely name.

Windydaysuponus · 07/09/2019 19:40

Looks like a melon...

Greenandcabbagelooking · 07/09/2019 19:45

Cal -ee-oh-pee. I teach a child called this, and that's how she pronounces her name. She gets called Calli by her friends.

Oh as in Oh my goodness.

I really like it as a name.

ilovethatshow · 07/09/2019 19:49

@Greenandcabbagelooking that's more how it would be pronounced in Greek, with the emphasis on the Oh (but more of an O as in chocolate) so Cal -ee- O-pee this is what I worry about as it's totally different to how others are saying it.

Either way it is a fabulous name!

HermioneWeasley · 07/09/2019 19:51

Cal-ee-oh-pee

BethanyGilbert · 07/09/2019 20:13

I knew someone with this name and I never ever managed to get my head round it. Just doesn’t seem like a name to me.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/09/2019 20:13

It reminds me of Talliho. Unless you’re upper upper class it’s just being something you ain’t, sorry

happycamper11 · 07/09/2019 20:19

Cally oh pey- but then my DC are half Greek so I probably pronounce it the Greek way. I prefer Callista for a calli name. Was my other choice with both dc, regret never using it and niether dc ended up with Greek names

Bitchfeatures · 07/09/2019 20:20

It sounds like a fruit Confused

DramaAlpaca · 07/09/2019 20:43

It sounds like a fruit

That's a cantaloupe! Grin

OP, I like Calliope, but everyone's going to pronounce it like the Grey's Anatomy character.

MunchMunch · 07/09/2019 20:48

I'm glad this has came up as ds1 was going to join the Navy and had to go to HMS Calliope and we were never sure how to pronounce it but it seems we've been saying it correctly.

NannyR · 07/09/2019 20:51

I've only ever seen it written down but I would guess at cally-oh-pee.

user1493494961 · 07/09/2019 21:17

Reminds me of caliper. When I was younger, I knew a girl who'd had polio and wore one.

Rachelover40 · 07/09/2019 21:28

Sounds like an illness or medicine.

avocuddl · 07/09/2019 21:34

Yep would be pronounced like on greys! Probably with Cally for short?
