Austin? Rafe?

I am 37 weeks pregnant with DC2, we don't know if boy or girl.

We've chosen a lovely girls name but really struggling with boys names!! The only few names that we both seem to agree on are Austin or Rafe - any comments?? Are these weird? I'd like to avoid the very over-popular names if poss but also do like traditional old fashioned names. BUT our surname is Head so some really don't work (Richard obv, Edward = Ed Head, Arthur = "half a head"....etc...etc... !)

Please help!

Really like Austin. Not keen on Rafe

cliare · 06/09/2019 19:46

I have a rafe. He quickly became a rafey ("Ray-fee") which has stuck and we love...

IgnoranceIsStrength · 06/09/2019 19:51

I love Austin. Weirldy it seems more popular in the south where I know of three pre school aged Austins.

ShirleyPhallus · 06/09/2019 19:52

My little nephew is Raphael, shortened to Rafe

I love it

Cookit · 06/09/2019 19:53

Personally I like Rafe a lot although I don’t know if I’d spell as Rafe or Ralph.
Austin I don’t mind but don’t particularly like. I know of one baby Austin.

Cbeebiesrehab · 06/09/2019 19:54

I know an Austin and it’s never grown on me. Like Rafe!

Saltnpepperr · 06/09/2019 20:47

Love rafe!

CatSmize · 06/09/2019 20:48

I really like Rafe.

Equimum · 06/09/2019 20:49

I love Rafe. We know an adult Rafe and he’s a lovely guy.

Bh2579 · 06/09/2019 20:53

I have an Austin. Can be Austin or Ozzy to his friends. Not many others for now.

EasterEgg80 · 06/09/2019 20:59

Do NOT use Rafe google ‘Raphe’ which sounds the same! Ralph?

percheron67 · 06/09/2019 20:59

Rafe is great. Austin is a town in Texas or a motorcar.

Gummybearsy · 06/09/2019 20:59

Austin in Texas?

Frith2013 · 06/09/2019 21:52

Austin Metro was my first car.

So Rafe for me.

Astronica · 07/09/2019 06:30

I love Rafe, one of my favourite boy names. Austin is okay.

userabcname · 07/09/2019 06:39

I really like Austin - it's a lovely name (and I know an absolutely lovely young man of that name which helps the positive associations!).
I like Rafe too actually. Good choices!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 07/09/2019 06:55

I prefer Raphael to Rafe.
and Raffy for short.

Austin just makes me think of Austin Powers 🤷🏻‍♀️

MitziK · 07/09/2019 07:36

Kid in my class was called Rafe. Well, that was what he had been christened - he was largely called Rape. Cursive handwriting can be a bastard sometimes.

Austin - depends on your age - might get a few 'as in Austin Allegro?' or 'Oh, behave' comments from older/tactless people. But then again, you'd also get that from Ford (Prefect/Escort/Focus).

In any case, it's not just the baby you're naming - you're potentially naming a six foot rugby player, polar explorer or chartered accountant, so pick what you like best.

MissHenty · 07/09/2019 11:50

Vote for Austin!!! Love love love kt

Nonameyet1 · 07/09/2019 11:57

Rafe is a great name. Austin makes me think of cars

Bol87 · 08/09/2019 13:41

I love Rafe but I’ve always had my doubts about putting it with our very British surname! I actually like Rafael but I just think it’s a bit too Spanish! I think Rafe is more usable!

AdaColeman · 08/09/2019 13:46

Rafe is a great name, though I do quite like Austin too.

diddlediddle · 08/09/2019 22:11

Austin goes better with Head. Rafe seems too short as a full name since both names are only one syllable/4 letters. It also looks like a nn to me, agree Rafe might be better short for Raphael. If not, Austin definitely flows better. It's a nice name.

diddlediddle · 08/09/2019 22:13

Ps don't worry about people talking about cars - no one your child age will have the faintest idea and neither will most adults! Austin powers is also a distant memory that most people won't think of, and even if they did fleetingly it's not negative.

DramaAlpaca · 09/09/2019 15:51

I really like Austin, but absolutely detest Rafe.
