Ellis. Boy or girl name?

MaySunshine123 · 06/09/2019 16:52

Not due until March, but we've been set on our girl name and our boy name for about 2/3 years!

We had chosen Ellis for a boy which we both really loved. The only Ellis' I've even known have been boys.
However we've recently met a lady called Ellis, and before this I'd never even thought it could be used as a girls name.

Now DH has gone off it as he thinks it's 'too girly' for a boy. I'm gutted as we really struggle to find any other boys names we both like, and we've loved it for so long.

So what do you all think? Is it a boys name or a girls name? Help me convince DH!

Definitely a boys name I'd say.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 06/09/2019 16:54

I've never taught or met a female Ellis but have had about 15 boys with the name. I would say its most certainly a boys name.

Tigerwhocamefortea · 06/09/2019 16:55

Definitely a boys name but I really don’t like it.

MikeUniformMike · 06/09/2019 16:56

Boy

Kiddofreddo80 · 06/09/2019 16:57

I’m not keen on surname-y names. I don’t like Ellis for that reason.
But; boy 100%

SpreadsheetQueen · 06/09/2019 17:00

I know 2 boys and never met a girl Ellis, however they do sometimes get shortened to El, which does sound more feminine.

hippy1952 · 06/09/2019 17:03

I know both girls and boys called Ellis!

SoftBlocks · 06/09/2019 17:03

I would have said boys but I recently met a female Ellis in her early 20s and it really suited her. Makes a change from all the Ellies and Ellas.

BertrandRussell · 06/09/2019 17:04

It’s a boy’s name. A few people use it for a girl in error.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 06/09/2019 17:07

Knew a boy Ellis, never heard of a girl one.

Fightthebear · 06/09/2019 17:09

Boy

Ohyesiam · 06/09/2019 17:09

Both

Fightthebear · 06/09/2019 17:09

Although I think in the US it’s more unisex

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 06/09/2019 17:09

I would assume boy, sorry. Elise might be an option for you? Or Alice at a stretch.

MerryMarigold · 06/09/2019 17:11

Definitely a boy. And not that uncommon either. DH is being silly (that should help convince him!).

Jadelouise202 · 06/09/2019 17:19

I would say it's a boys name.

MaySunshine123 · 06/09/2019 17:22

Wow, thank you for all your responses!
I'm glad to see everyone agrees it's a boys name!! Grin I will be telling DH when he gets home that he's being silly and to get over it!

I would have said boy, but I started watching Grey's Anatomy a few months back and one of the prominent characters, a female surgeon, is Ellis. Since then I think girl if I hear it!

simbobs · 06/09/2019 17:38

Boy

Gummybearsy · 06/09/2019 17:39

Definitely boys name!

But there seems to be a trend where girls are given boys names eg James, Elliott etc

KnobJockey · 06/09/2019 17:42

Mummy, in Scrubs one of the lead female characters is Elliot, and then of course there's Cameron Diaz- I think that Americans tend to be more unisex in their names, but I would still class all of those as more boys than girls.

Her0utdoors · 06/09/2019 17:43

Neither, it's a surname.

SirJamesTalbotAndHisSpeculum · 06/09/2019 17:46

Neither.

It's a surname.

Welshy545 · 06/09/2019 17:47

I was opposite from you. I liked this for our DD then everyone told me it was a boys name so it put me off using it for a girl! X

EdithWeston · 06/09/2019 17:48

Boy

Ellis Bell was the male name used by Emily Bronte, and Ellis Peters was the male name used by Edith Pargeter for their novels.
