Ellis. Boy or girl name?

MaySunshine123 · 06/09/2019 16:52

Not due until March, but we've been set on our girl name and our boy name for about 2/3 years!

We had chosen Ellis for a boy which we both really loved. The only Ellis' I've even known have been boys.
However we've recently met a lady called Ellis, and before this I'd never even thought it could be used as a girls name.

Now DH has gone off it as he thinks it's 'too girly' for a boy. I'm gutted as we really struggle to find any other boys names we both like, and we've loved it for so long.

So what do you all think? Is it a boys name or a girls name? Help me convince DH!

I know boys called Ellis and girls called Eilis ( pronounced Eye lish)

“I know boys called Ellis and girls called Eilis ( pronounced Eye lish)”

Those are two conpletely different names!

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 06/09/2019 17:52

Definitely a boys name, it made the top 100 (boy's name) this year. I know a few, all boys.

It's a welsh boys name so probably more popular in wales.

RuthW · 06/09/2019 17:55

I went to school with a male Ellis. He would be 51 now.

Since then I have only come across female Ellis.

It's unisex like Morgan, Logan, Taylor etc.

Either. I have known both.

thetwinkles · 06/09/2019 18:07

How about Elise if it's a girl?

AgeLikeWine · 06/09/2019 18:09

Boy, eg Ellis Genge who plays rugby for Leicester and England.

Thanks you for all your responses!

@EdithWeston that's really interesting, I knew that about Emily Bronte, but not about Edith Pargeter. Makes me like the name even more!

@AgeLikeWine That's probably why DH likes the name, he's a big rugby fan! And something to do with the 'Ellis Cup' in rugby as well Hmm

BertrandRussell · 06/09/2019 18:23

There are about 1000 boy Elis/Ellis every year. And a few girls- 50 last year.

MaySunshine123 · 06/09/2019 18:27

It’s a unisex name although mainly used on boys. What is your DC?

Ps. I’ve heard girls called Noah and James recently. So if you’re worried about Ellis for a girl don’t be. For a boy it’s obviously fine

Marmite27 · 06/09/2019 18:31

I know 2 in real life and one on Grey’s Anatomy.

All female.

AverageMummy · 06/09/2019 18:32

I know one Ellis - a lovely little boy

MissHenty · 06/09/2019 18:33

Oh just read the start of your thread

Your DH is being ridiculous sorry!

There were 726 boys named Ellis in 2018 and only 40 girls. It’s clearly seen as a boys name

MissHenty · 06/09/2019 18:33
  • those stats are from the UK, am assuming you’re uk based
Sexnotgender · 06/09/2019 18:35

I know a female Ellis.

Morado · 06/09/2019 18:42

To me it's a girls name as it's the name of my sister. There was a female present called Ellis in the 90s or something.. That's where my mum heard it.

Morado · 06/09/2019 18:42

Presenter*

Fightthebear · 06/09/2019 18:44

Was that Janet Ellis, it was her surname?

DontCallMeShitley · 06/09/2019 18:50

Ellis is a boys name, or an Estate Agent.

I am not keen on either but it would be pretty awful for a girl.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/09/2019 19:34

I’ve heard it more for boys but i think it sounds better on a girl
