Ellis. Boy or girl name?

MaySunshine123 · 06/09/2019 16:52

Not due until March, but we've been set on our girl name and our boy name for about 2/3 years!

We had chosen Ellis for a boy which we both really loved. The only Ellis' I've even known have been boys.
However we've recently met a lady called Ellis, and before this I'd never even thought it could be used as a girls name.

Now DH has gone off it as he thinks it's 'too girly' for a boy. I'm gutted as we really struggle to find any other boys names we both like, and we've loved it for so long.

So what do you all think? Is it a boys name or a girls name? Help me convince DH!

Boy

cliffdiver · 06/09/2019 19:38

I know a girl and boy Ellis.

I've grown up knowing the girl Ellis, and considered it a unisex name.

cptartapp · 06/09/2019 19:45

A boys name but somewhat effeminate IMO. Don't like it.

notso · 06/09/2019 20:14

I live in Wales hear Elis is everywhere. For boys.

bigmap · 06/09/2019 20:42

Girl in DS's class at school is called Ellis but I've heard her parents and sister call her Ellie as a nn more often

MeMeMeYou · 06/09/2019 20:45

I’ve known a few bOys with this name and one girl

SwimSwim · 06/09/2019 20:56

I loved Ellis for a boy too but OH didn't, so couldn't use it. I thought it was solely a boys name too but have heard a of a few girls with the name now. I'd still say it's a boys name first though and its lovely 😁

I know two female Ellises, both adults. One is still known as Ellis, the other as Ellie.

Marshamello · 06/09/2019 21:10

Boys name.
I like it!

Mrsorganmorgan · 06/09/2019 22:17

My grandson is Elis. Hear the name a lot in Wales

Swisskit · 06/09/2019 22:17

I've only heard it as a surname.

Oopsinamechangedagain2020 · 06/09/2019 22:49

I've heard it for both boys and girls but like it better as a girls' name.

Chewysmum · 07/09/2019 00:05

I like it for a boy, but I love "surnamey" names, my DS is Campbell. In saying that, I wouldn't be against using it for a girl either, it's a nice name either way. Ignore people who say it's just a surname, it's been a fairly common name for many years now. Do what you want to do, and tell DH to stop caring so much about what other people think, stand up for what you both want.

Shadow1234 · 07/09/2019 03:10

I like it for a boy or girl, but the two I know irl are girls. (One is 18 and the other is 15).

notangelinajolie · 07/09/2019 03:23

I know of a girl Ellis and a boy Ellis. So I guess it's unisex. A bit like Ashley which could be either boy or girl too.

Ellis is also a surname. Ruth Ellis - last woman to be hanged in the UK..

Astronica · 07/09/2019 06:27

It's a unisex name, as most surname names are.

As far as usage goes, in UK it seems to be principally used for boys though not exclusively, while in the US it seems to be gaining popularity as a girl's name.

Mermaidoutofwater · 07/09/2019 06:40

It’s one of my names, I’m female. People usually assume it’s my surname though because they don’t recognise use it as a girls name.

KatherineJaneway · 07/09/2019 06:59

Only Ellis I know is Meredith's mother on Grey's Anatomy.

MissHenty · 07/09/2019 07:30

@MaySunshine123 OP show your husband the statistics I posted above. They speak for themselves and nothing else needs to be said really. Ellis is clearly seen as a boys’ name. Extremely rare for a girl. Hugely popular for a boy

MaySunshine123 · 07/09/2019 08:11

@MissHenty thank you, I will do Smile

Both

ThatCurlyGirl · 07/09/2019 08:24

100% boys name to me

MissHenty · 07/09/2019 08:30

@MaySunshine123 great.
The statistics come from office national statistics and relate to the UK. The stats are on their website
