We’re not finding out whether we’re having a boy or a girl, but much closer on deciding a girl name. Which of these names do you prefer for a boy (and please say if you think any of them are particularly common at the moment).

Hector
Magnus
Quentin
Silas

@diddlediddle da Vinci code - Silas

If you've ever seen it! Could be why

whirlwinds · 06/09/2019 11:24

Very curious to those hating these names what you would consider good names? Grin my DS has one of these names and people all over love it, he is far from bullied and carries no weird nicknames. Throw a name like Liam at me and I gag, all down to taste, but would not bother making any remarks like " none of them" when someone asks which is preferred. I get loads of compliments for my sons name, end of.

Sparklysunflower · 06/09/2019 12:07

Maybe it depends where you live. We have a Quentin and we too get lots of compliments in real life. He's happy and has never been teased about his name. We're in Greater London, perhaps people are more open minded here?

fitzbilly · 06/09/2019 12:54

Jaguar I don't know where you live but where I come from no child every gets 'beaten up' for their name. I've been working in schools for 20 years now and names really aren't a reason children get used or bullied.

My teen-agers also confirm no one gets beaten up in their secondary schools for to their names.

And these are all pretty normal names!

fitzbilly · 06/09/2019 12:59

Whirlwinds they probably like boring names like William and Joshua.

SemperIdem · 06/09/2019 13:03

I really like Magnus.

CakeRattleandRoll · 06/09/2019 13:18

Really like all of them. Would probably go for Silas if I had to choose, but any would be fine.

whirlwinds · 06/09/2019 14:00

@fitzbilly Names where you are forced to nickname the kids as there is too many with the same name Smile My DS has a lot of friends with the same names. We know them as "big" name, "little" name, name+surname or pure nicknames.

whattodowith · 06/09/2019 14:06

Quentin

mistermagpie · 06/09/2019 14:07

I have a Magnus so would obviously choose that. None of them are 'hideous' though, how melodramatic!

Sparklysunflower · 06/09/2019 14:08

I was also intrigued by Jaguar2017's comments so had a quick search for her threads and these are her suggested names on another thread (the one about Henry, Lily and...):

Leroy, Dwayne, Jermaine, Derek, Winston, Carl, Tyrone, Jamal.

So I think we can safely say she has different tastes GrinGrin

mistermagpie · 06/09/2019 14:10

Now I'm not saying jaguars suggested names are bad but...

mistermagpie · 06/09/2019 14:11

Oh and my Magnus has never been beaten up for his name or called 'Maggy' in his life.

Gummybearsy · 06/09/2019 14:31

They're all good solid names. I like them all, in particular Quentin. It reminds me of Quentin Blake, we met him last year and he was lovely!

Cotswoldmama · 06/09/2019 14:38

Not really sure about any of them I quite like Quentin I know one who sometimes gets called Q. Try to imagine a 13 year old boy shouting a shortened versions of those names as that's what he'll end up being known as to his friends!

mintich · 06/09/2019 14:42

Magnus

mintich · 06/09/2019 15:58

I don't think Jaguar is in the demographic that would like these names going by the comments that have been made! I know adults with three if these names who have definitely never been beaten up for them!

Babynamegeek · 06/09/2019 15:59

Magnus!

Gummybearsy · 06/09/2019 16:08

I can't see what would possibly be tease worthy about any of these?

The only name that I've ever heard of being teased around here (and only jokingly I think) is William with Willy! And parents still call their sons William.

Malvinaa81 · 07/09/2019 19:13

Not Hector, and Silas sounds like a miser or reprobate in Dickens. Quentin is about the best.

Gummybearsy · 07/09/2019 20:40

I really like Quentin too!

anydream · 07/09/2019 21:13

I love Hector and Silas.
I like Magnus.
Quentin reminds me of the uncle in the Famous Five.

Antonin · 07/09/2019 21:45

I’ve always disliked Silas — don’t like a lot of names and words starting with S as they seem slimy and slippery like Slough (town , bog and snake skin shedding), slink, slime, sensuous etc.
Silas Marner isn’t the jolliest of characters.
Magnus has a great meaning and history.
Hector has a harsh sound and I dislike the meaning of the verb derived from the mythical character.
Quintin is my favourite. A
Qs are always special somehow and have a rarity value in English. Nice crisp sound and nice nn
