Rupert as a boys name

I’ve always loved the name and it was the only nam I thought of during pregnancy for my little boy, so far the name has had negative reactions from generation above me ( that’s a posh name, Jilly Cooper character, army slang)
But opinions from my own generation seem more positive - I like the think name because I don’t know any Ruperts, but when I found out Rupert Was the name of the chap who played Ron in Harry Potter I thought it was a nice name!
I know there’s also Rupert bear but that’s cute and if i avoided kids tv show names I wouldn’t never find a name!
Please give me opinions for or against this name?!

Gorgeous name

CassianAndor · 05/09/2019 09:59

I like it. I agree that it's lost a lot of it's 'posh boy' connotations from the past, not that that should matters anyway.

Disfordarkchocolate · 05/09/2019 10:02

I love it, makes me think of Rupert the Bear but that's my age.

Bentley111 · 05/09/2019 10:03

I love it... "Roo" is a gorgeous nickname. Wouldn't brand it a posh name at all.

daisypond · 05/09/2019 10:05

I really like it. It has had a bit of a posh image in the distant past but that’s changed.

Pinktulipsarethebest · 05/09/2019 10:07

It is a boys' name.

MrTumblePulledAKnifeOnMe · 05/09/2019 10:08

I have a Rupert. I've never had a negative reaction and very very rarely come across another Rupert.

AuntieStella · 05/09/2019 10:09

Lovely name.

Yes, I think it's still a bit posh, and yes it's enduring Army slang for inexperienced and slightly clueless young officers (Daphne being the female equivalent, if anyone's interested)

But it was popular in about the 1970s, and those names seem to be in the rise again

user1493494961 · 05/09/2019 10:12

Not for me, think it's a very wet 'posh boy' name. Roo makes me think of Winnie-the-Pooh, although if you're OK with Rupert the Bear, that's probably irrelevant.

Willyoujustbequiet · 05/09/2019 10:12

I'm sorry but I disagree. Where I'm from in the north east he would be teased and tormented endlessly. I couldn't saddle a child of mine with a name I knew would give cause to upset him. He may resent you for it

Sorry op Flowers

CassianAndor · 05/09/2019 10:21

well, your neck of the woods sounds pretty unpleasant if a child would be tormented for the name his parents gave him. What a shithole that sounds.

SayOohLaLa · 05/09/2019 10:25

I don't like it I'm afriad. A friend used it for their son, then used a much more common (as in frequently used) name for their next child, so it's always seemed very "try hard". I'm not aware they've had any issues with bullying over his name or anything but it certainly raised eyebrows when they announced it.

Dinosauraddict · 05/09/2019 10:27

I LOVE Rupert, it was on my shortlist, and my DH has a similar (but slightly posher version) of the name. Definitely use it!

joystir59 · 05/09/2019 10:28

Wet awful posh boy's name. Just wet, like Cecil or Cedric or Algernon. Yuck.

MotherOfLittlePeople · 05/09/2019 10:28

I'm north east and I know a lady with a little boy called Rupert. He doesn't get picked on. It's a lovely name OP x

mordecaithomas · 05/09/2019 10:29

I have a ten year old Rupert. Got a lot of shit for it back then but seems to be making a slight comeback these days.

MissHenty · 05/09/2019 10:42

Yes Rupert is lovely and would fit in nicely amongst the other names around today. It’s not that common but is rare enough for it to feel a bit different but not wacky. Go for it!! It’s perfect x

Poppydaisys · 05/09/2019 10:43

Where I'm from in the north east he would be teased and tormented endlessly.

I'm glad the parents and teachers around here don't allow such behaviour Shock!

Where do you live?

MarshaBradyo · 05/09/2019 10:44

I love Rupert but I just used it as the middle name in the end.

LetsSplashMummy · 05/09/2019 10:46

I think it really varies by area. I know lots of little boys who go by Roo, but they are Rhuaridh or Reuben, Rupert would be a less popular surprise (like finding out a Will is really Wilberforce and not William). However, my family down south would say that about Rhuaridh and take Rupert in their stride. Where are you based OP?

However, I've seen kids with similar names, Percy, Walter, Cuthbert... carry them off - so even if you are in an area where it isn't liked - your child will still be fine being a Rupert.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 05/09/2019 10:47

Here in the north hed get teased relentlessly

Poppydaisys · 05/09/2019 10:50

What's teaseworthy about Rupert compared to Robert or Reuben? Especially for a child?Confused

Astronica · 05/09/2019 10:52

I love it.

IsobelRae23 · 05/09/2019 10:56

It’s horrible I’m sorry.
