Lyra?

What are people's thoughts on the name Lyra?

My DH loves it and while I do really like it and I know it is more popular than it used to be I'm not sure if it's a name that is still one that would raise eye brows in real life?

Is it a bit weird?

I love the fact it is a star constellation and the character in his dark materials.

Also does anyone have any middle name suggestions?

I love it but when I posted a while back I got very negative responses in here Sad

KronksSpinachPuffs · 28/08/2019 00:05

It's pretty isnt it! I think in my head I'm just envisioning the look on my parents/grand parents faces if we went for it

(I'm not actually pregnant yet we were just discussing ttc)

I like it. It feels quite magical and cool.

DramaAlpaca · 28/08/2019 00:08

I really love it, it's very pretty.

On here I've heard people making comments about mishearing it as lycra.

BlockedAndDeleted · 28/08/2019 00:17

Love the complexity of the character in the books (though Pullman named her after his pencil)

Always reminds me of the scene where she’s in the cave and her name echoes as LIAR!! LIAR!!! LIAR!!!

Which she was...

I just hate liars.

I am looking forward to the BBC’s adaptation this winter though.

SuperSange · 28/08/2019 00:18

I know a Lyra; it's a lovely name.

KronksSpinachPuffs · 28/08/2019 00:29

Quite good feedback so far!

Yes I'm looking forward to the bbc adaptation too!

I've just watched Emma Willis: Delivering Babies and a baby was named Lyra. Never heard it before but like it

MrsEricBana · 28/08/2019 00:38

Really like it. Also love Alba which feels similar.

BoopBoopedooBoo · 28/08/2019 00:42

Lyra and Lyla are both nice.

The first reminds me of the Pullman books, and the second reminds me of Snoopy Come Home, where Snoopy's first owner from the puppyfarm was a girl called Lyla, who in the film he travels to see. Which infuriates Charlie Brown. Best thing, is I know a Lyla with a brother named Charlie.

Lyra is nicer than many names. One letter away from Lara on the other name thread, and I really dislike Lara.

Wehttam · 28/08/2019 00:44

I see Lycra and hear Myra.

Astronica · 28/08/2019 03:21

I'm not particularly keen on it and it does seem a growing and trendy name at the moment. But nothing wrong with it. I prefer Laura (old-fashioned now I know but feels more timeless to me) and Lilah.

gforg · 28/08/2019 03:53

Love it! Wanted it for my 2 girls but older sister vetoed it. My girls are now 9 and 5 and sister still doesn't want kids yet lol

Shadow1234 · 28/08/2019 05:32

Lovely name

RebeccaRae · 28/08/2019 06:08

I really like it. I'm usually very down on names which are woo or unique but I think Lyra is perfectly reasonable and very pretty.

RedCowboyBoots · 28/08/2019 06:09

It's OK. A bit like Lycra, but not bad if you don't mind that.

DressingGown · 28/08/2019 06:12

I think it’s lovely

Petrichor11 · 28/08/2019 08:24

I really like it

I love the books and the character. I only know one Lyra in real life who’s about 10.

Peachbubble · 28/08/2019 08:24

I like it

20viona · 28/08/2019 08:36

I like it

Badabingbadabum · 28/08/2019 08:37

It is really lovely. It might be the character name in a book but how many Wendy's over the years have heard "your name was just made up by J M Barrie for Peter Pan"!

Plenty of people won't have read HDM or seen the film or the series, they will just hear a name.

NameChange30 · 28/08/2019 08:38

Love it. I loved the books as a child. I also just like the sound of the name. And I don't think it's at all like "lycra" Hmm The c makes it very different.

userabcname · 28/08/2019 08:39

I like it!

wildflowersandweeds · 28/08/2019 08:48

Love it! Love the sound of the word, pretty yet strong. Plus it would remind me of Lyra McKee, the journalist shot by the IRA this year- her life story is incredible and I would love to teach my daughter about this other amazing Lyra.

Bicnod · 28/08/2019 08:51

Love love love it. If I had another daughter I'd call her Lyra.
