Is this a nice name? Knock some sense into me, and quick.

Turned 30 weeks yesterday with a baby girl and I’ve fell head over heels with the name Arietty I’m in loooooveee!!! Is it a dreadful name? It might be hormones.
Disclaimers

  • yes I’m well aware it’s a name from The Borrowers, and that it was made up for it.
  • and yes it was spelt with 2Rs as in Arrietty but I think that makes it a bit clunky!

So please, knock some bloody sense into me. I’m just head over heels with it!

Thank you
Emmy

Emmeline is one of my favourite names ever.
Arrietty is one of my favourite made up names.
Ariadne is one of my favourite ancient names.
I love this thread 😊

NotStayingIn · 22/08/2019 23:05

Love it!

Nc33 · 22/08/2019 23:07

Phelonie

Because it was one my favourite baby name threads

LittleMy20 · 22/08/2019 23:08

If you’re expecting a very small baby perhaps.

Nc33 · 22/08/2019 23:10

Sorry wrong thread!!

riotlady · 22/08/2019 23:11

I actually really like this name!

I always fancied naming a DD after Eilonwy from The Black Cauldron but my partner vetoed it.

Tonnerre · 22/08/2019 23:15

I like it, but it needs to be spelt with two rs.

Tonnerre · 22/08/2019 23:17

I know it's not the right thread but I can't find the correct one. Why on earth would anyone call their child Felony?

whattodo2019 · 22/08/2019 23:18

I love it!!! 😍

Tillygetsit · 23/08/2019 00:10

Sorry OP. Love it 😍😍😍

LucyFox · 23/08/2019 00:21

I think the “etty” makes it sound quite childish so I would choose Arriette or Arrietta with nn Arrietty as I think it with age better
I also like the idea of Harriet/Harriette with nn Arrietty but I know this won’t be to everyone’s taste

CatteStreet · 23/08/2019 05:58

'I loved the character in the Borrowers but although it's a sweet name I'm not sure it translates well into real life if I'm honest.'

Agree with this.

LemonPrism · 23/08/2019 08:06

I like, she could go by Ari

mogtheexcellent · 23/08/2019 08:12

Excellent name. Dd has a doll called arrietty - not sure how she spells it as shes only 5.

Shes named after the studio ghibli film based on the borrowers.Grin

Aethelthryth · 23/08/2019 08:13

Ridiculous. Just call her Harriet

WonkyDonk87 · 23/08/2019 08:23

Love it. Had it planned for a DD since I was a child (although actual DD not named it in the end). Thought I was really original until a woman who grew up on the same road as me used it for her DD. Grin
Go for it OP!

Flopdoodle · 23/08/2019 08:26

I love it and it was on my girl list but was vetoed by the oh :)

jackstini · 23/08/2019 08:32

Think it's really pretty
I would pronounce Arietty with a hard 'a' sound
Like Arietta too

BertrandRussell · 23/08/2019 08:42

The whole point of the name is that it’s a mishearing- a mistake. Why would you call your child that?

BertrandRussell · 23/08/2019 08:46

I mean, you wouldn’t use Eggletina or Hendreary, would you? Surely you eouldn’t?

Disfordarkchocolate · 23/08/2019 08:47

No knocking from me I think it's a beautiful name.

Astronica · 23/08/2019 09:35

I like it and would love to see it used.
I understood that it was a derivation of Harriet before it was used in The Borrowers, but could be wrong about that.

emmyblake · 23/08/2019 10:13

So torn!

BertrandRussell · 23/08/2019 10:16

Honestly-don’t. So tedious for her to explain where it comes from all the time.

emmyblake · 23/08/2019 10:43

Ok it is still the #1 name on my list, but given I am head over heels with really like Arietty... what are some other names I might like? I quite like Arietta.
I feel like I’m going 2 steps forward to just going with it... and then going 3 steps back! again and again.

I mentioned it to a friend who said it sounded like a pasta sauce Confused
