Is this a nice name? Knock some sense into me, and quick.

Turned 30 weeks yesterday with a baby girl and I’ve fell head over heels with the name Arietty I’m in loooooveee!!! Is it a dreadful name? It might be hormones.
Disclaimers

  • yes I’m well aware it’s a name from The Borrowers, and that it was made up for it.
  • and yes it was spelt with 2Rs as in Arrietty but I think that makes it a bit clunky!

So please, knock some bloody sense into me. I’m just head over heels with it!

Thank you
Emmy

Well, it’s better than the ubiquitous bloody Margo/Margot/Margaux.

Colourfulest · 22/08/2019 20:54

I love it because it's nice on its own but you can also have Ari or Etty as a nickname!!

millimollimandi · 22/08/2019 20:59

Arrietty Wendy?

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 22/08/2019 21:09

Arrietty is just too 'borrowers' for me. I love the borrowers, but as a name it'd be cute on a little one but not for an adult. How about Ariane? (Ah-ree-ah-na)

Or what about Harriet with nickname Arrietty?

AcrobaticCardigan · 22/08/2019 21:12

Hell no! Purely as it’s a made up name from The Borrowers. If it helps put things in perspective it’s up there with naming your child Khaleesi!

MoaningMinnie1 · 22/08/2019 21:13

A bit too Disney for me. You can call her, "Etty", for short which is quite nice - if you must give her the name :-).

SleepingStandingUp · 22/08/2019 21:15

Love it

feelingsicknow · 22/08/2019 21:16

Lovely name, but likely to be shortened to 'Ari'. Would you be okay with that? Even if not by you, possibly by friends, nursery etc.

derekmorgan · 22/08/2019 21:17

I love it.

Knittingnanny · 22/08/2019 21:19

Lovely name and in my 40 years of teaching I have never taught a girl with this name, so very special. Read the book to classes many times though and always thought I’d use it if I had a daughter.

ilovemykids5 · 22/08/2019 21:20

I have just watched a baby name video and one of the names was Arietta and I loved it. Hubby has vetoed Aria so will see what he says about this 😂

emmyblake · 22/08/2019 21:21

I am so bloody torn!
Arghhhhhhh
Love Ari or Etty as nn.
But is it too twee and pretentious?
But I love it!

Strongecoffeeismydrug · 22/08/2019 21:25

Hairy yeti 😳

emmyblake · 22/08/2019 21:26

I love it, and as for spending a lifetime having to spell out your name, I have to do this (unusual Welsh name) and it has never bothered me.

FredaFrogspawn · 22/08/2019 21:27

I prefer Ariadne (Ar-ee-ad-nee). She was the daughter of King Minos in ancient Crete. Almost the same name but classical and lovely.

Worlds0kayestmum · 22/08/2019 21:27

I really like it

VioletCharlotte · 22/08/2019 21:27

I think it's a great name. I loved it when I was the Borrowers as a child. Go for it!

BunnyJumps · 22/08/2019 21:28

It is pretty!

sheshootssheimplores · 22/08/2019 21:28

I’m not a fan. Any name that when said over the phone sounds like a whole load of other names is a no from me. I think you’re just setting your child up to have to repeat and spell their name for the rest of their life.

AudacityOfHope · 22/08/2019 21:28

I'm sorry, it's a 'oh god the hormones' name for me. It's just one syllable too many - none of them seem to go with the others, likes it's all cobbled together.

tracybe · 22/08/2019 21:30

It's a nice name, bit of a mouthful but not if the surname is shortish?

Pieceofpurplesky · 22/08/2019 21:31

Love Arietty and Ariadne
