What are your thoughts on the name Margaux? I like the sound but don't like the look of Margot (I just see the word maggot).

Outside of France (or any other French speaking country) the Margot spelling is often pronounced Mar-gott eg Margot Honecker

missmouse101 · 23/08/2019 07:38

But however it is spelt, it still sounds like an OAP name. Ethel, Margo, Beryl and Doreen....

devilishlygood · 23/08/2019 07:39

I expect there might be a few equally as ignorant folk out there who insist on pronouncing Margaux as Mah GOW....you know, because they want to make their ignorant point!! So you just shuffle past them and smirk.

If you like Margaux, you are most entitled to use it. I totally agree that Margot does look a bit like Maggot or (worse!) Margate!! 😂😂

Stick to your guns, OP. God bless the nit picky MNers....May they never expose themselves to MULTICULTURALISM!! 🤭🤭🤭

BykerBykerOoh · 23/08/2019 07:41

Maggot is kind of cute to be fair. Then she can be Maggie for a NN.

gerispringer · 23/08/2019 07:45

I think she’d get called Gateaux

georgialondon · 23/08/2019 07:46

I think they'd get their name misspelled all their life.

hazandduck · 23/08/2019 07:46

OP my French cousin who is 19 and absolutely beautiful is a Margaux. I associate it with her and think it is a lovely name. They are a normal, middle class family in Paris.

I also love Margot, such a classy name.

Grufallosfriends · 23/08/2019 08:01

I think she’d get called Gateau

Margaux (emphasis on second syllable) sounds nothing like gateau (emphasis on first syllable) GrinHmm

AverageMummy · 23/08/2019 09:44

I dislike it because it sounds like the sound of name a Rees-Mogg would have, not because it looks fake. Just think it’s horrible. I am one random unimportant internet stranger though

Labassecour · 23/08/2019 10:11

Unless the OP is French and/or lives in France, I don't think it matters much how it 'feels' in a French context, does it?
I just read a UK novel where the author gives the pen name 'Margaux Spreadeagle' to the author of a trashy bodice-ripper one of her characters is reading.

diddlediddle · 23/08/2019 17:05

I think it's the same as using Irish names with an Irish spelling if you aren't Irish. It's a bit strange. To the British eye it looks made up/plural.

If the OP is french then fine. Otherwise it is weird and the poor kid will be explaining it all her life.

Margo is better than Margaux if you really hate Margot.

rachelgrace · 24/08/2019 03:07

I really like it but I would spell it Margo so it is simple but does not look like Magot

christmas2020 · 24/08/2019 05:34

I know a few very posh French Margaux. Much nicer than Margot I think.

BertrandRussell · 24/08/2019 06:08

I suppose it’s better than Chardonnay..

shearwater · 24/08/2019 06:11

A Margaux sounds like a group of Margots.

Fine in France, but in the UK she would be called Margux, Margawks or Margeugh half the time.

Vasya · 24/08/2019 06:13

Love Margot but hate your suggested spelling.

MrsMozartMkII · 24/08/2019 06:33

Much prefer Marguerite.

Grufallosfriends · 24/08/2019 07:37

Fine in France, but in the UK she would be called Margux, Margawks or Margeugh half the time.

Not sure that's any worse than the non French pronunciation of Margot as Mar-gott

Maybe Margo is best outside of France?

I would have chosen Margot just because it’s more familiar and I think Margaux looks clumsier. I think Margot will be easier for most people to spell while still having the same sound you like.

reliahag · 27/06/2022 13:43

Looks like gateaux spelt incorrectly.

KirstenBlest · 27/06/2022 13:52

I don't like it and the Margaux spelling is even worse than Margot
Margaret and Margarita are nice
