What are your thoughts on the name Margaux? I like the sound but don't like the look of Margot (I just see the word maggot).

OP posts:

Pippilangstrumpfi · 22/08/2019 16:59

Yes, Margaux is the more popular spelling in France.

In Germany (and Austria, Netherlands etc) the name Margot is pronounced Mar-gott.

Margaux avoids this as it's always pronounced Mar-gaux (oh).

Pippilangstrumpfi · 22/08/2019 17:00

I think Margaux looks softer and less harsh.

katesalwayslate · 22/08/2019 17:08

I LOVE it! I knew a lovely Parisian girl called Margaux while I was at university and she was so classy and cool. I’d definitely consider using it myself.

Lavenderbluesy · 22/08/2019 17:30

I prefer the Margaux spelling too.

Softer, feminine and avoids the Margott pronunciation. And looks less like Margott.

Cbeebiesrehab · 22/08/2019 18:02

Whilst I too prefer the Margot spelling I find it so strange when people start eye rolling and saying ‘spell it properly fgs’ when Margaux is a recognised spelling! It’s a bit ignorant really.

Lavenderbluesy · 22/08/2019 18:09

It's like a French equivalent of calling your child Jorja or Rylee.

No, it's not. Margaux is a popular girls name in France. Some would consider more classy than Margot. It's the more popular spelling actually.

Louisasasa · 22/08/2019 18:11

I think Margot looks a bit ugly. Margaux is nicer I think

Grufallosfriends · 22/08/2019 18:23

Wow, there are some ignorant views on here...

Margaux is a perfectly nice name and a legitimate spelling. As others have said, it's actually more popular than Margot in France.

I prefer Margaux because it looks softer and won't be mispronounced Mar-got.

LittleDoritt · 22/08/2019 18:28

Hands up to being totally ignorant here as I had no idea it was a "proper" spelling and am really shocked it is more popular in France than the "classic" Margot.

cranstonmanor · 22/08/2019 18:32

In Germany (and Austria, Netherlands etc) the name Margot is pronounced Mar-gott.

Not in the Netherlands, it's either pronounced the french way or we pronounce the dutch g instead of tge french g. We don't pronounce the t.

OrchidFlakes · 22/08/2019 18:56

I absolutely love the name and it was top of our list for DC1 who turned out to be a boy!

I prefer Margot to Margaux but have also seen Margeau and Margoe used

7salmonswimming · 22/08/2019 19:18

Not everyone who lives in the UK speaks and writes English properly.

Not everyone who lives in France speaks and writes French properly.

French people calling their daughters Margaux is like English people calling their sons Jayson.

Bad enough using the incorrect spelling in your own language; it’s worse than contrived to do so in another!

DramaAlpaca · 22/08/2019 19:21

I think Margaux looks much nicer than Margot, which I really don't like. It's softer.

Lalaland8 · 22/08/2019 19:43

I agree that margot looks like maggot Grin

Margaux looks must better.

Go for it x

Lalaland8 · 22/08/2019 19:44

And you're never going to please everyone on here!

pooopypants · 22/08/2019 19:48

OP, are you french?

AverageMummy · 22/08/2019 20:28

Horrible

Snoopy90 · 22/08/2019 23:45

I personally prefer margot spelling. But I've heard a lot of people say they see maggot. I think Margaux is fine though. She can always change the way its spelt anyway.

I always find it strange when people talk about the 'correct' spelling of names in a snobbish kins of way. All name spellings have to come from somewhere and language evolves.

Yika · 22/08/2019 23:58

I like it, v pretty.

(I live in a French-speaking country and know several Margaux. I don't know any Margots!)

Tillygetsit · 23/08/2019 00:01

Margaux is perfectly acceptable and I find all the violently disapproving comments hilarious and a little ignorant tbh. Much prefer this spelling. Classier and softer and not at all like spelling Jason Jayson 😂😂😂

Nocturnalpearl · 23/08/2019 01:19

I adore the name Margot but this spelling reminds me of gateau I'm not sure why Confused

HalfManHalfLabrador · 23/08/2019 01:34

awful

katesalwayslate · 23/08/2019 04:55

It’s really weird how this strange Mumsnet rumor that Margaux isn’t a correct spelling (or is like spelling your child’s name ‘Jayson’). All these know it all Mumsnetters totally ignoring the fact that Margaux IS a perfectly lovely name in French! My French friend has reassured me that what is being said here is just wrong. I feel like most Mumsnetters won’t give their approval to a name unless it is 1) English and 2) very traditional. OP Margaux is gorgeous!0

Astronica · 23/08/2019 05:07

This is my favourite spelling of Margaux/ Margot/Margo. I had no idea it was controversial, but I do find MN is very quick to jump on any name slightly out of the ordinary.

Grufallosfriends · 23/08/2019 07:09

Some very ignorant views on here!

Margaux is a lovely name and perfectly normal spelling. Lots of French parents choose that spelling as it's regarded as more 'classy' or 'chic' than Margot.
