What are your thoughts on the name Margaux? I like the sound but don't like the look of Margot (I just see the word maggot).

I hate the name Margot and this just makes it worse. I know it's Margot and yet I read Margox.

pinkcardi · 22/08/2019 14:52

Margaux is a type of wine

Margot is a French name, nickname for Marguerite

I love Margot, but not spelt the other way

Dobinette · 22/08/2019 14:53

Don't like it. Looks a bit try-hard, sorry. Nothing wrong with Margot.

hsegfiugseskufh · 22/08/2019 14:54

I like it! Wouldn't have known it was a wine.

I also like Margot though, could you have Margo without the T?

missmouse101 · 22/08/2019 14:56

It sounds just the same as Margo which is godawful, and is a name for a seventy year old.

ChristineBaskets · 22/08/2019 14:58

It looks like the plural of Margot to me.

Propertyofhood · 22/08/2019 15:04

No, awful!

It's like a French equivalent of calling your child Jorja or Rylee.

Colourfulest · 22/08/2019 15:16

Awful

badg3r · 22/08/2019 15:20

The -aux suffix is used for plural masculine so looks like you have gone from having one girl to several boys. I don't mind the name Margot but don't like the spelling you suggest.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/08/2019 15:23

I don’t like it whatever way its spelt.

BertrandRussell · 22/08/2019 15:24

Margaux is a type of wine.

AntoniaB21 · 22/08/2019 15:27

I know a French Margaux whilst at university. I always thought the name was so pretty, and she was a lovely girl. I really like it 😊

OtraCosaMariposa · 22/08/2019 15:27

Margoh
Margawh
Mahrrgott

Or just stick to Margot.

Frith2013 · 22/08/2019 15:30

Oh, that’s absolutely dire. Like a sort of vegan margarine.

Sparklysunflower · 22/08/2019 15:46

Margaux is the more popular spelling in France, used more often than Margot.

I don't like Margot as it is pronounced Mar-gott outside France

Chirico · 22/08/2019 15:50

It's like a French equivalent of calling your child Jorja or Rylee.

I don't think any French person would use this -- it would code as wine. But in a Paris-set novel written by a Paris-dwelling American that I read recently, the hick American mother who arrived to embarrass her Francophile daughter was called Margaux.

CedarTreeLeaf · 22/08/2019 15:54

It's currently #33 on the popularity chart in France. It is a more popular spelling there than Margot.

Oh ffs, another one of these threads 🙄

No, it looks ridiculous. And as pointed out by a previous poster, masculine plural.

CedarTreeLeaf · 22/08/2019 15:58

Oh ffs, another one of these threads

I had no idea that the name Margaux was a controversial topic lol. I just wanted to see how it is received but now I know it's not well.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/08/2019 16:00

Margot Hemingway changed the spelling of her name to Margaux, which has always mildly amused me... Reminds me of the girls at school who insisted on mis spelling their names to look 'quirky' ; always using a heart or star to dot the i.

WatcherintheRye · 22/08/2019 16:08

Well it's not well-received on here, but in real life, people would just think "Oh, that's unusual/quirky/lovely/not my choice" and move on. No name in the world is going to be liked by everyone. If you like it, that's good enough!

HeadintheiClouds · 22/08/2019 16:09

Oh, just spell it properly, fgs.

Sparklysunflower · 22/08/2019 16:51

All the French parents calling their daughters Margaux are wrong HmmGrin. It's actually more popular than the Margot spelling!

CedarTreeLeaf · 22/08/2019 16:53

Sparklysunflower

Exactly, with some of the reactions here you would think I just made it up lol.

I like it! Makes me think of Margaux Hemingway (though originally she was Margot).
Not as contrived as alternate spellings of some names.
