Caitlin/Katelyn??

Hi, one of the names we’re toying with is Caitlin. I like this spelling of it but DH thinks it should be Katelyn. I know it can be spelt either way but I think of his way as being a bit more American???

Would love to hear people’s thoughts!

It's Caitlin, I think that is the normal spelling. Nice name, but the spelling Katelyn is just a modern invention, why does he need it to be 'more American'? I'd go with Caitlin.

Caitlin is really lovely, and to me it looks like it'd stand the test of time better than Katelyn.

My DD is Caitlin and I love the name and this spelling. Amazing how many people call her Catlin though Angry

Caitlin is the Gaelic original, it’s my preference and very prevalent in the US from those of Irish descent.

There are all sorts of made-up variations, it’s what you prefer ultimately.

Thank you! I’m glad my spelling seems the more common way to spell it. DH doesn’t want a ‘more American’ spelling, he just thought that’s how it was spelt. I am the one who thinks Katelyn seems more American!

My niece is called Katelyn (we’re English, so doesn’t seem American to me). I prefer this spelling personally but she can’t find her name on any of those name personalised things!

Be aware that in Ireland where the name comes from Caitlin isn't pronounced as Katelyn.

Is more like Cashleen. (I know that's not quite right, but I can't think how to explain it).

I was going to say what Missillusioned just said, that in Ireland it's usually not pronounced the same as Katelyn. I like the Katelyn pronunciation best, but the Caitlin spelling.

I'm Irish so I can't stand Caitlin pronounced as Kate-lynn, although it seems the battle is lost. It should be Cotch-leen or Coytch-leen.

Like a lot of Irish names pronunciation varies by region. In my part of Ireland it's something like Coyt-leen, slightly different to MindyStClaire's examples.
