Marley for a girl? Opinions please!

Hello,

We are expecting baby no.1 on 3rd October 2019 and we decided to keep the gender a surprise.

We have always known exactly what we would name a baby boy but, have struggled so much with girl names.

I came across the name Marley for a little girl on someone's instagram post and immediately loved it. I thought my fiancé would poopoo the idea straight away as, he hasn't been a fan of the unusual girly names I have suggested in the past but, he also loved it!

I told my Mum, Dad and sister and they immediately referenced the dog from the film Marley and Me, which disheartened me until I mentioned it to my friends who all loved it and said no one would make the comparison to the dog so, I felt a lot better about it. But then, we told MIL and her partner and she said no way and referenced the blooming dog again.

My fiancé and I talked about it and decided that we liked it and so, stuff what everyone else thought but... queue the next hurdle.

We realised that if we were to have a girl now and name her Marley... then in the future had a little boy and wanted to name him Bobby, our children would be called Bobby & Marley. At which point everyone we have spoken to has insisted we couldn't do that to the poor children without people shouting 'No Woman No Cry' at them.

Looking for some opinions please! Are we reading too much into it? We may never be blessed with any more children and so, this baby's name will be the only one that matters (It took us 6 years and a mc to conceive this rainbow baby), we may also have two boys or two girls and so again, it wouldn't be an issue.

Do you think people would make the reference if they were introduced as Marley and Bobby?

I didn't realise naming your baby would be so hard! I thought that would always been the fun part. It's true they say you don't realise how many people you dislike until you try and name your baby!

Thank you in advance! xx

Marley is a dog's name!

Give her a first name that looks good on a cv

I taught a male Marley last year and this is what came to mind 'Marley was dead, to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it. And Scrooge's name was good upon 'Change for anything he chose to put his hand to. Old Marley was as dead as a doornail.'

Marnie, Marie?
Marley isn’t good, sorry.

jacquettalux · 19/08/2019 17:35

Marley is lovely. It's not a classic, admittedly, but it's easy to spell and pronounce. It doesn't sound made up. The little Marley I knew was very sweet. I doubt you'll regret it in the future. Even if you have a boy next (which you might not) your taste in boys names may change. Don't stress about the future. If you love it, use it!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 19/08/2019 17:37

What about Marni for a girl op? 🤷🏻‍♀️

mondler · 19/08/2019 18:16

I met a baby girl Marley recently and I thought it was a nice name. Her older siblings are Zoe and Robyn in case they are also to your taste.

You're never gonna please everyone but when the baby is here it will own its name very quickly.

Ive met a few baby Felix which to me is always a cat name, Jasper which I think Carrot and Casper which is a ghost. But all the names suited the babies and most importantly it's the parents right to choose the names Smile

Good luck choosing x

thoughts on your other names
All good names really
Daisy - flowery but beautiful
Sophia Sophie sophy sophyla - ( all sophia(s) I have known have been decent and kind )
Brooke sounds solid and strong
Myla girly
Frankie - know a boy very mean
How about Mellissa?

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 19/08/2019 18:41

Robyn! This is such a lovely name with a similar feel!

tripletmum8 · 19/08/2019 18:44

Love Marley, met a woman recently with a girl Marley who is one of the sweetest and kindest people I know.

ReggaetonLente · 19/08/2019 18:47

I did know twins called Bobby and Marley. Dad smoked A LOT of weed.

I also know sisters called Molly and Marley, which I think is odd as they are almost the same name.

Not a bad name in itself. I prefer Marlowe though. Not that you asked 😁

Branleuse · 19/08/2019 18:50

I prefer the name marley to the name bobby.

I know two marleys. A boy and a girl

Arnoldthecat · 19/08/2019 18:53

No..

Abstractedobstructed · 19/08/2019 19:03

Sorry, not Marleigh, it was Marlie. Still more feminine than Marley which to me is definitely masculine.
D'oh.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 19/08/2019 19:11

I just get the Marley & Marley song sang by the two old cranky puppets from A Muppet’s Christmas Carol in my head.

Then Marley and Me.

Finally Bob Marley.

One of those connections I could deal with, but three means that you’d have an even higher chance of people making “hilarious” jokes about your name every time you’re introduced, which would get bloody tiresome.

Neoflex · 19/08/2019 19:18

I know a Marley whose full name is Marlena and nobody thinks of Bob

Frith2013 · 19/08/2019 19:20

Bobby and Marley?

Pull the other one.

MerryDeath · 19/08/2019 19:53

i do like Marley for a girl actually, but not in this world as that name is already taken and Marley is a labrador sorry.

frsttimemama · 19/08/2019 20:30

Thanks so much everyone for your thoughts and advice! I must admit a lot of the responses have made me giggle, if nothing else! Smile

Definitely given me a lot to think about!

Similar names:
Marla
Marilla
Mariel
Mariella
Amelia
Millie

Actually if you're thinking of Bobby for a future DS I would pick a name not ending -ee - I think they will go better together that way.

My favorite of your second list is Sophia.

hereforasillygoosetime · 19/08/2019 21:11

I love the name Marley.

Bobby and Marley a definite no no though.

Hadenoughofitall441 · 19/08/2019 22:39
