Name you loved but it was just too quirky?

Is there a name you didn’t use because it was just too quirky or “out there” but still love?

I loved Starr, Juniper and Skye, DH vetoed! (Don’t even think those are that quirky, tbh.)

You can guess people’s lifestyles by their name associations - mine for Stella is - Philip Sidney, Stella Gibbons, Stella Tillyard and Stella by Starlight.

And by “lifestyle” you mean “social class”, right? Because I am unquestionably a pleb and have no idea what you’re talking about.

Lager, on the other hand... Grin

I love Juniper for a girl and Ace for a boy. DP will absolutely not go for either!

moonpiggle · 19/08/2019 19:22

1066vegan Wow you have just taken me right back to childhood! I loved that book! I wonder if I could actually get this on amazon. 😊

1066vegan · 19/08/2019 19:34

@moonpiggle. Yes you can! 😊

I just looked on my app and they've got a few copies. I fell in love with the tv programme first and then came to the book because of the show.

I really love the name Lolita. I also know o really could not use it

DonEmmanuelsDingleberries · 19/08/2019 20:12

@Haworthia - Stella by Starlight is when you neck a couple of shandies in the park after closing, innit Grin

MaggieFS · 19/08/2019 21:18

We were close to using Angus, with Gus a possible shortening, but decided it was poss a bit unusual and wouldn't work with our surname.

Korvalscat · 19/08/2019 21:55

My surname at the time was Osborne and although it started as a joke I got quite fond of the idea of Cosmo Osborne or Obadiah Osborne but exDH vetoed. He loved Asa and Job/Joab but I vetoed. We didn't have any quirky girl's names so when she arrived DD got a classic name.
I also loved the names Joachim and Marek but as neither of us had any German or Slavic heritage or connections I didn't argue for either. I am aware that they are perfectly normal names in their native countries but not in the Midlands in the early 90's

Not quirky but not usual at the moment my DD called her bump Norman, again as a joke name but quickly got used to it and her exP had to work to talk her out of it and back on to one of the names from the agreed shortlist.

hellnonono · 19/08/2019 22:19

@Libbylove2015 we have a Fox too, parents also hated it! Fox is popular though, massively on the rise - we already know of three others so wouldn't be at all surprised if DS is not the only Fox in his class.

Other names we loved

Winter
River
Sonny

Pixie. I was told later in the pregnancy that she had stopped growing and was likely to be very small. I imagined this little pixie face. My gran told me it sounded like a gypsy child, went on and on about it. So I named my daughter Elizabeth, same as my gran, as she was thrilled.

Cassandrainthenight · 19/08/2019 22:33

For Stella my first and only association is Stella McCartney.

Angus - sorry, I would be thinking Aberdeen angus and steaks straight away. And Gus sounds like it's short for Gusset 😀

Lots of people mentioned Cosmo, why, is it really out there? I'm so used to the name of this columnist, Cosmo Landesman?? I think that he kind of single handedly popularised it for me, and he's in his 60s! It's surely short for something else, but I really like it.

Also Clementine - that's Churchill's wife :) also makes it sound like an established name for me, not at all out there (and I know of a few little ones)

Cassandrainthenight · 19/08/2019 22:35

I like Cassandra Grin
But first, not having any more DC, second wouldn't like Cas/Cass for short which she'd inevitably end up as.

Loveislandaddict · 19/08/2019 22:37

Roderigo - loved this name since studying Shakespeare at school. Nothing to do with the character as such, just liked the name.

Cassandra - not particularly wacky, but a main character in Only Fools and Horses was called Cassandra.

My dc have classic, conventional, names (both nice names). This thread is making me wish I was a bit more daring.

Loveislandaddict · 19/08/2019 22:38

@Cassandrainthenight

Great minds think alike! Hadn’t read your entry whilst writing mine

Marcipex · 19/08/2019 22:39

Faraday.
But it’s too late now.

Horehound · 19/08/2019 22:39

Buddy

Cassandrainthenight · 19/08/2019 22:40

Looked up Cosmo - not short for anything, but is derived from cosmos, as I suspected, which makes it even more cool. Also goes with most surnames I think.

hereforasillygoosetime · 19/08/2019 22:40

Juno

Cassandrainthenight · 19/08/2019 22:42

Loveislandaddict 🤗😃

raskolnikova · 19/08/2019 22:47

Tristessa

Why would you want to name a baby Sadness? Confused

Cassandrainthenight · 19/08/2019 22:48

hereforasillygoosetime

I really like it and know one (though named so literally only because born in June). However it was mentioned a lot on the annoying names thread.

pooopypants · 19/08/2019 22:48

Joaquin. Wanted it as a middle name for DS

ArtichokeAardvark · 19/08/2019 22:50

We nicknamed my bump Horatio after we found out we were expecting a boy. It really grew on me but in the end I thought the poor kid would be bullied rotten!

WutheringBites · 19/08/2019 23:05

Gertrude. Love the name; it’s so strong. But apparently completely died out.

Plus we lived in The West Country at the time & id be concerned that a little girl would end up being “gurt lush”....

Walnutwhipster · 19/08/2019 23:11

Floyd but it didn't suit DS once he arrived.
