Opinions on double-barelled first names is it silly and pretentious? I really like Luna-Rae but I don't know...

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
bridgetreilly · 12/08/2019 21:44

Yes, it's silly and pretentious. Also chavvy.

Luckingfovely · 12/08/2019 21:44

What she said ⬆️

Agree with pp.

Please don’t saddle your lovely baby with something so hideous! Go classic and you’ll rarely go wrong.

ChaChaDeGregorio · 12/08/2019 21:50

Sorry OP another negative voice here.

Rae is particularly bad. It's not a proper name, it's recently popped up as a part or double barrelling which in itself is cringeworthy and naff. Nearly as bad is Mae.

ThailaLove · 12/08/2019 21:53

They are really unpopular on MN but I don't mind SOME of them. Names like Lacey Mae, are quite common and perhaps would be perceived as chavy but I met a girl called Layla-Rose which really suited her. I wouldn't personally use double barrelled name though

Runkle · 12/08/2019 21:54

Unnecessary.

Frith2013 · 12/08/2019 22:11

I’m not a fan.

Summerunderway · 12/08/2019 22:15

When ds started nursery 20 years ago(!) a dm had 6 dc all with db names. Her dsis had 5 dc also all db. Gave me a bloody headache being within shouting distance of any of them tbh!

Runwayqueen · 12/08/2019 22:19

I have a double barrelled first name, a classic 80s name. I'm not chavy, and I'm thankful for being able to have a choice in which name I use.

missmouse101 · 12/08/2019 22:21

Luna Rae sounds like some kind of spaceship. Luna is grim-just sounds like Loony. Rae is hideous and double barrelled is unthinkable! Sorry OP!

Courtney555 · 12/08/2019 22:22

My mind instantly goes to "Blu-ray"

BizzzzyBee · 12/08/2019 22:26

Chavvy. Hyphenated names sound like characters in the Beverly Hillbillies.

ViserionTheDragon · 12/08/2019 22:38

Sorry, but that's an awful name, she'll be a target for bullies. Are there other, preferably single word names that you like?

user1493494961 · 12/08/2019 23:00

Have to agree, Luna-Rae is awful.

HUZZAH212 · 12/08/2019 23:28

Luna is a very popular name for a dog. Rae - what about Rachel Anne nn Rae? It'll open up her options considerably more.

Walnutwhipster · 12/08/2019 23:35

It's definitely seen as chavvy where I live.

timshelthechoice · 12/08/2019 23:36

No.

JoanieCash · 12/08/2019 23:38

runway am weirdly desperate to work it out...? I’d forgotten the 1980s double barrelled but remembering girls at school: Marie-Claire, Mary-Jane, Mary-Pat, Ann-Marie. Is it any of those? Am I warm?

CodenameVillanelle · 12/08/2019 23:43

Terrible. They either have crap filler names tacked on like Rae, May or Rose or they are just two random unconnected names that don't flow like Laura-Hannah. I know there are some older French names that are ok like marie-Therese or jean-Paul but in general they are really crap.
Luna is a nice enough name by itself. Why stick a random syllable on the end of it? If you want a 3 syllable name there are loads to choose from.

Sophronia · 12/08/2019 23:44

It is very chavvy. -Rae is the new -Mae.

areukiddingme · 12/08/2019 23:47

Double barrel last names are all awkward enough, don’t do it with a first name

LittleDoritt · 12/08/2019 23:51

Bet Runway is Sarah-Louise Grin

Luna is a lovely name. Luna-Rae (Lunar ray) is unspeakably awful.

TildaTurnip · 12/08/2019 23:53

Yeah you do know what MNetters generally think about hyphenated names. Grin
