DM not keen on our name list

Me and DP are due to get married in the new year. So far the names we like are Levi Matthew, Conrad Erwin for boys or Ophelia Innogen, Eira Guinevere and Victoria Elizabeth for girls. DM is not keen on any of those names and has not failed to let me know so. I am somewhat disappointed that she did not like the names we picked. Is there anything genuinely wrong with them.

I don't think it's unusual to talk about baby names with a partner at all. I wouldn't mention to DM or MIL though. Especially if I wasn't even pregnant. When I was pregnant I told my mum a name I liked and she said she hated it put me right off! Didn't tell her anymore

That said I don't like any of the names on your list quite try hard

The funny thing is I always knew exactly what is call my hypothetical children. Names I loved, appropriate meanings, names which went with mine etc....them.they were born. At that point it went totally out the window. With DD i had a name i liked during pregnancy but couldnt decide, with DS i couldnt decide on a boys name from 11 weeks. He was 3 weeks old before he has a name and DD was registered with a name at 7.5 weeks, so I wouldn't actually worry overly about it. What seems like a good idea now at seem different either when you are pregnant or when there's a little person lying in your arms. It's good to know the type of criteria for names you like though, it definitely helps narrow the array down.

I like all your names apart from Levi, Erwin and Conrad.

OP your mum is really being unfair. It’s nothing to do with her what you call your baby. She’s had her chance at naming her child. Try and ignore her.

Elizabeth is my favourite.

UrsulaPandress · 07/08/2019 22:25

I'm loving Innogen.

Peanutbuttericecream · 07/08/2019 22:30

Don’t discuss it with her. The decision on naming a baby is entirely the parent’s.

Your names are lovely.

Littlejets · 08/08/2019 00:44

I haven't even read the thread because telling anyone your idea of a name will instantly put you off of it whether it be someone they know or just their opinion. Please keep your ideas to yourself. Choosing a name is hard!!!!!

I remember telling someone my choice and their irrelevant response was 'why would you name a child that' to which my response was 'why would you name your child "THAT" (we were due months apart and i was hormonal).

Lilyannarose · 08/08/2019 15:09

I'd never heard of Innogen and assumed it was a typo for Imogen until I looked it up and realised she was a heroine in a Shakespeare play.
I think it's fine to use although you may have to correct people a lot if they mistake it for Imogen.
Ophelia is beautiful although becoming more popular now.
What ever you decide, it's your choice and your decision so maybe keep the names to yourself and don't mention until the baby arrives if your mum's opinion matters to you.

MyOtherProfile · 08/08/2019 15:14

When is your baby due? Is there a chance she will have forgotten these names by then? If so please don't ever mention future names to her again.

Pinkout · 08/08/2019 16:09

Don’t discuss names before the birth with anyone except your OH, it’s such a mistake. I made the same mistake with DC1 so just didn’t tell a soul with my other three children, it wasn’t worth the hassle!

Pinkout · 08/08/2019 16:10

Ophelia is lovely btw.

Lilyrose90 · 08/08/2019 17:04

Doesn’t matter what your mum thinks. I’m sure she’d like them if you actually used them.
Having said that, personally I don’t like Conrad Erwin, Ophelia Innogen or the name Guinevere

Crunchymum · 08/08/2019 23:42

So you aren't actually pregnant? Yet you are discussing names with your mum? Shock

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 15/08/2019 23:11

Your Mum had her chance to name her children. Now it is your turn. Don’t tell her in future.

JoanieCash · 15/08/2019 23:23

I get that Innogen is the original imo glen spelling, but Inogen is also the leading brand name for portable oxygen machines. Quite frankly that’s in your head it’s kind of like calling your child hoover rather than harvey.

JoanieCash · 15/08/2019 23:24

Imogen not Imo glen!
